I'll probably get some grief for this but.......  Do you "carry" while camping?   I am an avid hunter, & collector.  I observe all state laws
and avoid those states/cities that infringe on my 2nd amendment rights.   I dont go to New England or the West coast. 
I  am looking to install a small weapons storage  in my CL.      I feel pretty safe in most campgrounds but as they say "better safe then sorry"

I for one would never think of putting a nanovault in the cabinet over the fridge. Or a pocket holster between the mattress and the front wall. And if I did, I would never, ever put a Shield 9 in either one.

[/quote]I'm not a lawyer, but I believe it's perfectly legal to transport a secured unloaded weapon in just about any state, especially if it's in your mobile "home". In CA there might be some issues with magazine capacity if you purchased it after 2000.

Just don't try to sell it, keep it in your glove box, yada yada yada....

If I owned a firearm - and I'm not saying, here on the interweb, that I do, but if I did - I would be VERY careful to thoroughly research the statutes of each state I was passing through, or even near. You never know when road conditions or a detour can force you across a state line you didn't intend to cross.

Pin during my USA tour last year I camped for a week at the NRA Whittington center.  I had a large number of firearms that I used throughout the center.  I avoided California (Actually all of West coast) I drove around Illinois and South Carolina. It added a few miles to the trip but gave me peace of mind. SC doesnt reciprocate with GA go figure.  The New England states and DC are off limits I just dont care to deal with their laws.  

OBTW  I lost all of my firearms in a horrible boating accident.

Avoid New York if you have a handgun. You have to have a permit to own a handgun in NY. Not permit to carry or anything just own, even in the confines of your own home. As far as traveling through what I've read is that if you only stop for fuel and bathroom breaks on your way through the state you should be okay.  If you stop overnight you change the scenario because now NY has become your destination and you're not just traveling through.  NY is NOT gun friendly to put it mildly.

Part of the difficulty with the question is not just around personal defense, but other recreational activities. I personally enjoy a variety of shooting sports including every form of firearm and bow. I have also recently made the decision that my equipment will remain home this summer where its safe. Its unfortunate that this is the case because I was looking forward to some fun with relatives up in New York, but its just not worth it. I would love to use my own equipment, but it is almost too much of a headache to figure out the individual laws for each state I'll be traveling through. Most people only think about pistols when this idea is brought up, but the laws also complicate the transportation and usage of shotguns, rifles, and bows for all sorts of activities.

On the flip side. This is a decent example of how our system of states is designed to work. Each state figures out what works best for their population, and I support that regardless of my feelings on the individual laws.
