30 Amp cord for the 10.0

Hi, this cord has to be a locking cord, correct? I see they have a little L shape on the female. So this is the only one that will fit? Also if my cord is too short is it OK to use one of those orange outside extension cords with an adapter? Thank you. Getting ready for our first outing with this unit this weekend.

You can use a normal extension cord with an adapter if you keep it under 15 amps (or whatever the extension cord is rated for). You can also get a 30 camp extension cord:

Thank you. I am told that cord will not work because it does not have the correct female plug that has the L shaped hole. I'm told it has to be like this.

If so, your existing cord should end with a plug that looks similar to a standard household plug but larger and with angled blades. The link I sent will connect to that and extend the distance of your existing cord. If you're looking to just completely replace the cord (or you don't have one) then the link that you send would work fine.

Hi. I hope I'm not misunderstanding the question. If you have a QS 10.0, its power input on the outside is an ordinary 15-amp male connector, recessed into the side of the camper. We have an 8.1 but the power requirements and supply are (so far as I know) the same as a 10. All we ever use is a 50' 14-gauge orange outdoor extension cord rated for 15 amps. What we DO run into in many camps is no 15/20-amp power output, but rather only 30-amp, which then requires a special plug adapter. The first time I encountered this was long ago in a KOA. I went to the onsite store and the guy sold me a $5-buck adapter that looks like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Conntek-Male-Female-Connector-Adapter/dp/B00268WS72/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1409089616&sr=8-7&keywords=30+amp+rv+adapter+female

When we encounter these 30-amp-only plugs we just plug in the male 30-amp adapter and plug our plain-old-ordinary 15-amp orange cord into that, then into the camper. Just because the output can be 30 amperes doesn't mean you have to draw 30 amperes (you'd trip all the breakers or blow the fuses in your camper). All you are drawing is the maximum of 15 amps. We have been safely (I hope!) doing this for 5 years without blowing a fuse or setting fire to the camper. I don't think you need anything more complicated than an adapter you can pick up almost anywhere that RV supplies are sold.

Mine has the 30 amp plug on my 10.0 and the cord that tinkeringtechie showed is the one that would work for me its a standard 30amp rv plug. Thanks, this is a 30 amp unit, it has air conditioner that takes 15 amps by itself. They gave me a cord but I need a longer one. I don't think I can use a orange extension cord to draw 30 amps. The female side that goes into the unit has a 3 holes. One of the holes is like an L shape.

     Ron[/quote]Our trailer uses the exact same plug. It came with a 25 foot cord (like the link above) and we also have a 25 foot extension cord (like the one I posted earlier). I've only had to use the extension cord a few times.

My 10.0 apparently has an entirely different setup for power. I have a recessed cord that has a standard 30 amp male end to it. All I ever have to do is add the 30amp to 15amp adapter if I need to reduce it. It sounds like the newer models come with a removable cord.

Ron, did yours not come with a power cord at all?

[p]Let me clear up some confusion. NEMA defines two types of 120V, 30 amp connectors. One has three blades in a circular arrangement and one of the blades has a locking lug. The other type uses three straight blades but two are set at an angle.

LL built the trailer with the first type of male connector on the trailer. It is more positive and uses a screw locking ring. But RV parks use the straight, angled blade connector. So LL supplied a bastardized cable with a female circular connector on one end and a male straight, angled blade connector on the other end so it can plug into RV power.

There are two ways to extend that cable. One way is to use the cable that tinkeringtechie noted in his first post. It has male and female straight, angled blade connectors to match the male connector on the LL supplied cable. The other way is to get a cable (typically used on boats) that has the circular connectors on both ends and plug it into the trailer and then use the bastardized LL cable on the other end that will plug into RV power outlets.[/p][p]
[/p][p]I like the latter solution because it uses the locking ring connectors which makes for a more positive connection and the connector will be inline with the cable as opposed to the offset angled blade connector.[/p][p]

Just to confirm - I think there are 2 different styles.  My 2012 XLP has a cable as Sean described - hooked permanently to the camper and rolls up inside.  This is the same way my Jayco popup and Starcraft Hybrid were.  The QS 10 shown on the LL setup video shows a male "port" on the outside of the camper that you plug in an external extension cord to.
