We will be leaving Walla Walla tomorrow - or as I like to call it - Wawa. My husband says it is because I have had too much wine. We usually keep beer on ice in our cooler. However, we have been worrying about cooking the wine in this heat, so now we have our bottles of wine in the cooler on ice.

On to the Columbia River Gorge, arriving on Thursday at Ft. Stevens. Hope everybody else is enjoying their trip, except for maybe pin, who it seems, lives close to Ft. Stevens. Also, flemke, is working but lives not too far.

Where's your next stop ?

I was out at the coast today. Went crabbing at Netarts Bay, got half a dozen Dungeness, maybe 8 Red Rock crabs.

You are in the area for the absolute best time of year.

Umatilla is our next stop. We have no reservations. We are just going to wander and enjoy the Gorge and take our time. We will have to stop somewhere to wash our Jeep and Camplite, because we have been down some dirt and gravel roads. I would like to bring a clean rig into Ft. Stevens.

After spending a couple days exploring the Columbia River Gorge area and Mount Hood scenic byway, we're on the western outskirts of Portland where we will tour around Mount St. Helen and see some sights in Portland. We will arrive at Fort Stevens on Tuesday and really are looking forward to meeting all of you there! Safe travels to all!

Show and tell, Q&A and other stuff at thier units Saturday.

We are heading west on I-84, west of The Dalles, enjoying the view of the Columbia River. This is Sunday. How come there are no boats on the river?

What kind of boats are you looking for and how windy is it? Might see some sailboats and wind surfers around Hood River. Some good wineries there as well. Will probably see some grain barges but the larger ships don't go much East of Portland.

Just stopped at a Pilot to buy gas - was not allowed to pump it ourselves. Is this the situation all over Oregon? Are we supposed to tip the person who pumps?

Yes, that is true everywhere in Oregon, state law (although I have found a few little stations out in the boondocks that will let you pump your own when there is only one person covering both the store and the pumps, even asked me to on occasion).

As far as tips go, I only tip if they do something more than just pump my gas - some stations they will clean your windshield for you, and if they do that, I'll tip them a buck. Otherwise, no tip.

No tipping.

How can you be west of The Dalles, heading to Umatilla ?

If you aren't already past Bonneville Dam, stop in and check out the fish counting window.

Also, just a little further west there's a naked beach at Rooster Rock State Park, if you're into that sort of thing.

We went right past Umatilla. At 70, I am a little past the age for bathing suit optional, in fact at this age, it's more like bathing suit required!
