Awning on 6.0

I just purchased a 6.0 and have a question regarding the awning. It seems when it zips on the shiny coated side is not facing up. Is this correct??

Congrats on the purchase! In my experience with our 6.0 our awning like you thought, shiny side goes up.

I have not seen any printed awning pole installation directions, but I just experimented and was able to get them up by myself.  Lengthen the poles to your desired height (a little bit lower than the roof so rainwater slopes away). Insert the pole into the corner hole and then attach two the ropes over that.  Stake the ropes one at a time and adjust the tension as needed.  I just put two ropes for each pole and it worked well.  Four staked ropes total.  You may need to adjust things as you go.

We are thinking about getting the 6.0 awning, or possibly even shelling out for the screened porch.

I've read through all the forum posts that mention the awning or the porch. The consensus seems to be that the screened porch is not worth the money; that it would be more worthwhile to get  free-standing screened structure that could be put next to the trailer, or elsewhere.

More folks seem to like the awning, except some express concern that it might damage the trailer tent during heavy winds. If you don't zip the awning onto the tent, then it would seem that you would not get as much rain protection over the door and adjacent window. Has that been your experience?

Thanks!

alf- I did not experience any wind-related issues with my awning attached on my 6.0- even during storms.  At times, I needed to adjust the tension on the ropes, but I found that in most cases the poles/awning stayed secure.  It was nice to be able to keep the window next to the door unzipped a bit even during the rain without the rain coming into the camper.

We have the "screen room" on our 6.0.  The big disappointment was; it is not fully enclosed against the camper.  The other two disappointments were the minimal Velcro available for attaching the privacy panel and the 'pain' of zipping the side walls which often would "release" after starting the zippers.  We have made modifications to fix all these issues and now love our screen room.

We added a skirt against the camper side by buying marine vinyl and attaching snaps under the camper on the frame rail.  I cut a slit for the axle and step so to ensure a complete enclosure.  We also had the side  walls permanently sewn at the zipper lines.  Lastly we had the privacy panels sewn on at the top and additional Velcro sewn to the sides to provide good holding during storms.

We have traveled two summers and experienced extreme storms with no issues.

OK, we just bought the awning, and it arrived today. As noted above, it doesn't come with instructions (odd), but it is pretty obvious how it works (zip on, adjust pole height, stake out with ropes). But, here is the real mystery: the awning came with a Ziploc bag-full of snap hardware! For the life of me, I can't possibly figure out what the snaps could be for, or where I could install them. Any clues?

Update: I receive this email:

It sounds like they may have thrown that in on accident. The awnings do not come with anything like that. You can either scrap it or find a use for it in another application if youd like.

How do you like the awning?  I am trying to get one for our newly purchased 8.1 and it's taken me a week just to get prices and now they say it will be several weeks before it even ships out.  : (
Such a hassle trying to get any parts!!  How was your experience?

I like the awning. It allows us to keep the door and adjacent window open during rainstorms. Admittedly, it is one more thing to set up when we camp, but it is usually not that big a deal to have to drive in two stakes.
