Has anyone replaced their bunk mattresses with anything more supportive (other than an air mattress)? Any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm not sure if this matters but it is for the 13 BHB. Thanks, Erik

I've tried using the self-inflating air mattresses under the existing mattress, with some success. The larger ones from REI are about the size of the bunk. I leave the mattress inflated.

I also tried using the closed-cell foam type of camping pads. I have a couple of 3/4" thick ones that I store under   the dinette cushions during the day (cut to fit the dinette bench size) and use to supplement the cushions when sleeping on the dinette.

Neither is a perfect solution, both are better than nothing.

Try MattressInsiders.com.  They have mattresses that you can custom order.  They usually run a sale this time of year.  Look for promotion codes before you order. We have a 16TBS with twin beds and had them made to fit our beds as they are an odd size. We bought 8 inch gel infused memory foam mattresses and love them.

Memory foam topper from Overstock or Amazon. We have one in our 11ft and love it.

I went to Sams and bought a "Trump Select" queen size for my camper.  I have it in my 16DB and it is GREAT.  it cost around $400, but now I sleep as good as I would at home.  You WILL need help getting it in and if you put one in, put your shades up before you start so that you don't hit them with the corners.  My new mattress was expensive, but I graduated from tent camping after all these years, so to me, the mattress HAD to be upgraded, or else I would just sleep outside.

And this was not an endorsement for President.

Memory foam is really heavy, so if that's a concern, you might look for a local foam supplier who can custom cut open cell foam of any size, density and thickness. I still put a camp mattress under it to add a little cushion and more importantly to prevent condensation on the lower bunk. We just wrapped the foam in an old quilt, didn't bother with a formal cover.

After a bad experience with a LL stock mattress in our previous TT, we ordered our 21 BHS without any mattresses.  Instead we purchased two of these http://www.airbediq.com/trslma.html in the 28" x 73" size for our bunk beds based on measurements provided by LL.  The mattress is a little short on the bottom bunk because the corners of the frame are squared.  The outside corner of the top bunk is angled and the mattress fits fine.  These mattresses are very comfortable, even for my adult son who tested out the bottom bunk for a full week on our first camping trip.  He used a rolled up towel under his pillow to take up the extra space at the end of the mattress.  They appear to be very well-made as well.  I'm not sure how the price compares to a custom-made mattress though.

We don't typically use both of our mattresses at the same time because our Corgis sleep on the bottom bunk on dog beds at night, so we store one of the mattresses as a spare for guests.

Memory foam is really heavy.....NOT
Memory foam is really heavy.....NOT
[p]Depends on how much. 4" of Memory Foam is a lot heavier than 4" of Open Cell foam on average. Nothing is as heavy as a high quality Coil mattress. Our Stearns and Foster Queen at home is a lead anchor.[/p][p]
[/p][p]We use a thin layer of Memory foam combined with an Open Cell foam layer on top of our LL mattress. Although the Mem foam layer is half as thick as the Open Cell layer, it is much heavier.
