The foam ones I got at Lowes smelled for a day or two and then the smell was gone.

I used the "we sell mats" brand.   No smell at all.

[font size="3"]I used Tatami tiles from Rubber Flooring, Inc. They are safe for kids, no outgassing, etc. Also 7/8 inch thick for maximum insulation. Easy to cut and install.

Mine are from Harbor Freight, and like everything there, smelled of fuel oil. I hosed them off and scrubbed them with a carwashing brush and dish soap, then left them outside for a week. No more smell.

Mine are from Rubber Flooring Inc.  The Cherry laminate finish.  I used a lot of Fabreeze and opened some fresh air room deodorizers.  It's tolerable.

Tatami Floor Tiles question.  I just received mine. Charlie M or others who have used these...

1. Their installation guide says to leave a "thickness of tile" (7/8 inch) gap at the edges for expansion/contraction with temperature change.  I don't want that big a gap.  Have you noticed substantial change with weather?

2. Also, did you cover your bathroom? Just wondering about splash from shower getting under and causing mildew.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

[font size="3"]I did not leave any space. In fact some edges are pressed in pretty tight. With the short distances involved I wouldn't expect any problems.

I did completely cover the bathroom floor. Some water does splash out or get spilled, but try to minimize it. I've pulled up the pads and seen no mildew. The rubber is not supposed to support mildew growth.

You don't say which CL you have, but if you have a slide you may have to remove two plastic trim pieces from the bottom of the slide so it clears the 7/8 mats. No problem.

I did an imperfect job and ended up with edge gaps ranging from 1/4" to 1". Close enough for me. We put the original rug mats down on top.
