Replacing AC outlet

We have a dedicated outlet for our AC unit in our QS. We rarely (read: never) use the AC and I was wondering if I can replace the factory outlet with one with USB ports on it. If we ever use the AC I would not plug anything additional into that outlet, but if we're not using the AC can I utilize that outlet for charging our devices?

That would be fine. That is just a dedicated outlet to allow for the higher amp draw of the AC unit. As long as the outlet you replace it with is rated for the required amperage your will be fine. I'm going off memory here but I believe the circuit is setup with a 20 amp breaker. Plus the AC unit is an off the shelf window AC unit designed for a typical household outlet and current. With that in mind I would think running the USB/120v outlet combo would be fine. I would think you could even use both the AC unit and the USB outlets at the same time if you needed to. The USB won't draw hardly anything in comparison to the AC unit.

This assumes you are comfortable working with electric

After pulling the outlet and looking at it I decided to go a different route. I bought an adapter that plugs into the outlet that has one plug and 2 USB ports on it. I've seen many a outlet and switch replacements in our old house but the wiring in the QS looked different and I didn't want to mess anything up.

Yeah I'd rather hear you be safe than sorry. In general though the wiring should be the same standard as household 120v outlets

The receptacles in the Quicksilver are called self contained receptacles. I wanted to change the single AC receptacle to a duplex, but left it for now when I saw what they were. They look easy enough to install, even without the suggested tool, but I have never installed one. I am a Master Electrician by trade so maybe I am just less intimidated by them. Check out these links:

I have not seen one with USB yet.

You could always just install a box like this and use a regular device like you would in your home. (All links are just representative and for information only. I don't necessarily endorse any of these products or retailers.)

I replaced mine with a wet location plug. I was not impressed with the plug that was installed on mine. Seemed really cheap. Now I can plug a fan in to move the air around with out having the cord in the way.

I did a mod that put the AC plug and outlet out of the way and hidden. Kept hitting the plug with our feet getting out of bed. Here's the link http://livinlite-owners.com/thread/15/mods-on-8-1

I may have missed this in your post but where did you get the door that you cut inside of the trailer to put the outlet behind...thanks.

Hi VMCMN,

Yes, I was wondering the same thing!

The door is from the side of the A/C cabinet. Since I narrowed the cabinet the door wouldn't fit anymore so I installed where I did for some extra storage space and to hide the plug. http://livinlite-owners.com/thread/15/mods-on-8-1
