What would YOU have done?

So what would you do?  It was just this past Saturday.  We get set up at a state campground (just north of Gainesville, FL) and decide to make a quick run for basic supplies while it's still daylight.  In one direction, the nearest town is about 8 miles away; opposite direction, closest town is 10+ miles.  In this area, there are a lot of open fields, farm land, American flags and yes, Confederate flags waving proudly.

We're on a mostly empty stretch of two lane highway when I see a body on the side of the road! It was sprawled out, no baggage or anything else, just a clothed body lying there!

"Stop, Honey!", I yell.  Only too acquainted with my practical jokes, my Husband keeps driving until he can ignore me no longer.  He then turns the truck around and because there are few cars on the road, we are able to approach a 'corpse', I'm now certain, without leaving the roadway.

My Husband calls out, "Are you alright, Man?"  Suddenly, the 'corpse' sits up to reveal a male immigrant who musters his best attempt at English to ask for a ride.  So, what would you do?

[p]Resist the urge to pick him.  Contact the police and tell them that [/p][p]someone is possibly hurt or confused at such and such location.[/p][p]Safest thing to do.[/p]

Agreed. Unfortunately the best approach is to not even stop. On a deserted road it's too easy to fake a situation and pop up with a gun. Just note the location relative to the nearest mile marker and call authorities as soon as you have cell service.

 Interesting conundrum!

As an ex LEO my inclination would be to investigate. But one large factor is that I'm usually armed. And I certainly would want to be before I approached a "body" in a situation like this. It could so easily be a set-up.

The human response is to want to help, and that's what some cretins count on. The most conservative action would be to drive on and report it to authorities.

Many years ago that very thing happened to us.  This was before cell phones and no one was thinking about illegal immigrants then.  The guy was groggy and likely stoned.  We gave him a ride to a gas station and left him with a few dollars to make a call and buy some food.  I'm sure at the time we were thinking about the Good Samaritan in the Bible and said a quick prayer before letting him into our car.

Today we would have called for help.  Thank goodness for cell phones.

[p]I understood what you were reflecting, GW. I know there was no real corpse. It was an attempt at some humor. Though it's a great thing no corpses were formed in the making of the event too...

The link to the article seems to be broken.

On the Confederate Battle Flag. I see no aspect of racism with it. I see it as a symbol of rebellion much the same as the Gadsden Flag. If either of these flags represent racism then the cotton they were woven with should be considered racist too. I will be the first to warn anyone who desires to strip me of my cotton boxers...YOU WILL have a fight on your hands!![/p][p]

I find great value in this forum.  My daily practice is to click on the recent posts so that I can catch up on the day's activity.  My thanks go out to those who are always so ready with helpful ideas related to camplites or RVing in general.  What I hope is that we could gain consensus over not having this become a political forum where personal views about highly contentious and complicated topics are discussed. It pushes me away from the conversation and certainly decreases my interest.

+1. Strongly agree. This thread has drifted too far.

[p]GW, I don't believe any agent of the state can discriminate legally. An FFL is an agent of the state. For an FFL to state as a matter of policy that he or she will not service a sector of the public, selecting only choice sectors of the same community and abandoning all others, is very risky and will probably disqualify him or her from serving in that capacity.

My call is that he is in violation legally. He is officially out of compliance. He, as an FFL, has no "right to refuse" unlike some of those others that are constitutionally provided for and protected in the Bill of Rights.

The good the bad and the ugly facts are up above in my post here. Hopefully we can take these as adults.[/p][p]
[/p][p]In my state the rules are very different. The police chief has the ultimate supreme power over an individuals ability to not only perform daily carry but also if that person gets to carry pepper spray. By the time that person gets to the gun shop the only thing that is in his way is a NCIS check. Pass that and it's like any other transaction for chewing gum. And you can't refuse to sell an adult chewing gum.[/p]
