Step Problem Fix

As I was pulling out my step yesterday, I got an idea to remedy the problem discussed in another thread, regarding the step on our Camplite 21 RBS.
As noted, the "rise" from the step tread to the trailer floor is about 10 1/4"......ouch ! Building code and normal human stride likes a rise of 7 1/4" to max of 7 3/4".
SO......I will be adding a new tread on the existing one with a spacer to make it 3" higher !!!! I envision making it out of a textured aluminum plate, but in reality, I know I can easily make the with, yes, WOOD, and cover the tread with a non skid surface that you can buy at Camping World. I believe that we can still store the step in the travel position, even with the added three inches. No new step. Relatively easy to do. And hopefully, LL will fix this problem at the factory, in the future
 I am traveling now for two months, but when I do this modification, I will post pictures of it on livinliteforum.com, unless this site makes it easier to upload photos .

I advise caution.   Adding wood can be a slippery slope.......

That last step could be a doozy but a pad there too would suffice.

Got to admit that "Woody" is sort of appealing to me in some strange way

I wouldn't worry about it being wood. Take 2 pieces of 2x6 rough cedar for one level and you have most of what you need. No rot worries. Secured with a few recessed bolts with large washers (use stainless hardware). Also, copious holes drilled for drainage. Rout some grooves or channels as well.

No worries about dog toes, either.

This is an idear I will...mostly think about and maybe do during the winter when I'm bored.

A piece of old (or new) horse stall matt on top, or even underneath as you see fit would give you more height. But man, they are tough to cut.

Thinking about designing an aluminum diamond plate extension that will hook on the existing step with 3" rise and give 1 extra step down below that. Have some extra aluminum D plate at the plant and will work on something in the next few weeks. Will update if I get it worked out.

That is exactly the right mentality. I have built a step that uses my leveling blocks to adjust the first step height. The issue is picking up the three inches for the top step, but we all need a bottom step that is 7 1/4" below that. You are definitely on the right track. I just bought a welder, which I'm learning to use, but don't know how to weld aluminum. You could patent this and put them up for sale on this site. Good luck!!
