Mazda CX-5 2014 with QS 10.0

Here is my rig. Mazda CX-5 2014.

Picked-up my new QS 10.0 on saturday & really happy on how the 220 mi return trip went to come back with it.

At 60 mph on the highway, I go an average of 26.9 mpg. Not to bad.

You are right on the edge of meeting my personal criteria for needing trailer brakes. See the Brakes thread.

I would go out on a wide road with your trailer and practice a few all out stops from 60 mph. Does it track smooth as you stop? Do the tow vehicle brakes tend to lock up uncontrollably? That vehicle almost certainly has ABS so that should help avoid locking the brakes in an all out stop.

If you can control a panic stop and particularly if you practice a bit so they don't become a panic, then I think you will be ok. Otherwise consider trailer brakes. Other QS 10 owners have investigated adding them and it is relatively easy to do.

My little quick easy tips. Reinforce pvc pipe with  automotive zip ties.  Keep trailer tires inflated to maximum.

Under the same conditions (cx-5 & QS10), I got 28 mpg on the 200 mile drive to pick up and 20 mpg on the way back. This was flat terrain and 65mph on freeway. The extra width compared to TV really impacts mileage. I could not hit 28 mpg at any speed. I should also add that I was driving about 10 mph faster without trailer.

What if he jacknifes it while doing this ? No trailer brakes, it will want to keep going, and if his wheel is turned at all, or if one tire stick or slips, it could break loose and he could lose it.

I recommend for brakes and against this test.

I had a sudden stop with my Grand Marquis pulling my 10.0. A 1994 abs didn't really work as it should. Locked the front up and had no problems with the trailer. Was actually impressed with how it did. Was in downtown Dallas from 45-50 to zero. Sacred the crap out of me and woke the wife up from her nap. Poor brakes on that year of Grand Marquis.
