Buy only a 4 cycle engine on a generator. Your camping neighbors will thank you for not stinking up the place with a 2 cycle engine that inherently has to burn oil.

4 cycle has many advantages over 2 cycle. Though I must admit the smell is not high on my list of advantages of the 4 cycle. A properly mixed 2 cycle gas does not, in my experience, have a significant smell or smoke other than on initial start up.

The biggest drawbacks to me are the noise and high rpm rate. Almost without a doubt they produce a sound that is just harsher on the ear all while running at a noticeably higher rpm.
Despite that I'm still attracted to the compact size and convenience. No worry about leaking or changing oil, and if you are handy around small engines they are cheap and easy to work on.

All that said I'm still sticking with my 2k watt Generac. It might weigh more and be slightly more complicated but it is far superior and its safer for electronics.
