I like almost everyone had heard of the VW emissions scandal where the company has been caught wilfully cheating emissions testing on a grand scale. Other than that I've been oblivious to the significance and really haven't paid much attention to the issue.

In >> [a href="http://livinlite-owners.com/thread/1978/nitrogen-tires"]another thread[/a] << forum member Thudd3r  posted a video by an Australian commentator named John Cadogan talking about nitrogen-filled tires. I enjoyed the guy's style so I looked up some of his other videos. I thought this one about the VW scandal was worth sharing. I learned something -- and was entertained at the same time.

From a technical standpoint that video didn't tell me anything new. It did use sensational language- "horrendous', "poison gas", "crimes against humanity" as well as profanity to sensationalize the story.

What VW did was totally wrong. Not to excuse VW, but I will bet that their action contributed less than a tenth of a percent to the the world's NOx emissions.

And oddly a simple programming change will not fix the problem for some of their cars and engines. It may take significant new hardware additions: urea injection and soot filters to make it work. VW will probably be better off buying those cars back and crushing them for scrap.

I did think the "crimes against humanity" part was over the top. The video did help me better understand that vw owners might have success with a class action suit. Earlier when I had heard reports that it might lead to one, I cynically thought of a bunch of greedy vw owners making much too-do about nothing. Now I have some sympathy that they may have legitimate concerns regarding the impact on the resale value of their vehicles. I also thought he did a good job of explaining how this scandal is different from other manufacturer's coverups of issues that eventually led to expensive recalls.

sometimes the truth is sensational...and in a world where everything commonly gets downplayed, you often have to be "over the top" to even get someones attention.

maybe if our kids had lung cancer resulting from exposure nox, we wouldnt think it was over the top
