Title: Electric brakes
Post by: flemke on July 10, 2016, 11:14:02 PM
Just spent this weekend putting electric brakes on my QS10.  The fine people at etrailer.com were a big help in getting the right parts for me.  I am also using a Tekonsha Prodigy RF brake controller which greatly simplified the wiring I needed to do on my tow vehicle.  Leaving in 10 days for the west coast owners rally then heading to Glacier National Park and now towing over so many hills is less worrysome.

I've been toying with the idea of adding brakes to our QS 10. We tow with a Subaru and it would just be nice to have the extra stopping power. Ball park....what did it run you for the setup on the trailer? How long did it take? Have you tested in hills yet? We are in the Midwest, so, unfortunately, no rally for us this year.

The cost of the components was about $200 from etrailer.com.  I spent a weekend putting them on being real careful.  Spent another $40 or so for wiring and a 7 pin adapter. The most expensive part was the Tekoshna RF controller I used because the only wiring I needed to do to my CRV was run a hot line to the 7 pin connector.  I probably spent another weekend wiring the CRV and making a custom mount for the controller because I didn't want to drill holes in the frame of my QS10.  The brake controller remote plugs into a 12 volt outlet and tells you the voltage and proper connections are made plus a manual overide.  Had to dial the power down or it will smoke the tires.
