Title: storage solutions
Post by: thudd3r on April 12, 2015, 11:57:47 PM
we really like our vrv, but the storage space is a bit sparse.  how about a thread with your approaches for increasing storage space.

fortunately, since the decor of the vrv is basically "garage", the shelves and accessories produced for garages and enclosed trailers fits right in.  anything stainless steel matches really well too.

here are some of the mods i have done to increase the available storage space...

removed hanging bar from narrow "closets" and added plexiglass shelves to double the usable space.  basically a rectangular piece of plexi with the corners cut out so it will rest on the aluminum tubing used to frame the cabinet.  being plexi, it is easy to see through to the lower shelf and light gets through...no more kneeling down to see what is in the back

Nice Mod's.
As soon as I get my water leak fixed, I will be doing the same. I too will mod the storage cabinets for more useable space.

yea 1st things 1st...gotta figure out that water leak...that has gotta be frustrating.  besides my fresh water hose coming loose one time, the only other water leak i had was when a small amount of water got trapped in the flush valve and cracked during the winter.  that spring i had a sprayer every time we flushed the toilet.

another weekend project to add to the storage space in our vrv.  previously we were using a flat rubbermaid container under the the sink to store to flatware.  was a pain to get things out and everything was just sliding around in there, leaving it pretty messy.

i tried for awhile to find a thin aluminum drawer i could hang behind the sink and put a utensil organizer in.  everything i found was too deep or too long (the counter area is only about 14" deep).  so instead of finding a drawer to put a flatware organizer in, i created a drawer out of a flatware organizer.  found one that was the perfect length (bamboo...gasp  :D), created a couple of hanging brackets using 2" aluminum angle, and added a pair of self closing drawer slides and a handle

A very well thought and well executed series of mods.

We just ordered one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MKBB8XU/

Bought sight unseen, so I can't comment on the quality yet, but the reviews are really good. Hopefully it will solve two issues for us - the lack of kitchen counter space, and the lack of storage space in the BC7X20.

If the quality is good, I will figure out some way to attach it to either the floor or the wall or both. Preferably in a way that is removable for the rare occasion where we need the extra space for toys. The plan is to put it just inside the door so it is close to the kitchen. With our floor plan, that is kind of dead space anyway.

If the quality is not that great, we'll just use it for storage around the house somewhere, and keep looking for a solution...

that looks like a good option.  nice thing about the aluminum plank flooring is that you can mount things just about anywhere (just be careful to not drill through a tank  8D )

if you mounted a couple of hooks to the sides of it you could strap it to a couple single e track receivers.  then when removed you would only be left with the 2 e track receivers, which are pretty unobtrusive.  you could even tie other items down in the space if needed.

to get 2 of the e track singles, i found it was cheaper to buy the earthquake strap kit and just not use the strap than it was to buy a pair of singles.

thudd3r -- I think your bamboo drawer is one of the nicest looking mods I've seen. I especially like your use of aluminum angles that give it a well-fitted look.

Your last "after" photo suggests your mods have crossed over from the machinist 'practical functional' side to the artistic 'unnecessary but nice' side.  (:))
