Title: Big Bend Ranch State Park
Post by: yetisb on March 20, 2015, 12:29:57 AM
My husband and I just returned from Big Bend Ranch State Park. It was an amazing trip if you like being in a secluded camping spot.  We stayed in a high clearance camping spot.  It was bumpy and slow going but it was worth it.

Did it require 4 wheel drive to get there?  A secluded campsite sounds great.

All that green seclusion looks wonderful to me.

They have 3 types of sites. 2 wheel drive, 2 wheel high clearance and 4 wheel drive. The site we were in was high clearance.  All of their sites are secluded.  The 2 wheel drive sites are grated dirt roads. Unless you have a large trailer you should not have a problem getting into those. We had a couple of spots on the way out of our campsite that my husband placed some rocks in just to make it easier to get through. Be prepared to go slow. To get to the ranger station it is a 27 mile grated dirt road. Make sure you have everything secured because it is bumpy ( lots of chatter bumps).  Also, on the unimproved roads there are spots you will get scratches.  All I can say is, for us it was worth it.

Did you do any stargazing while you were there?

What type of wildlife did you see?

Were there any other campers around?

The stars were amazing. It has been a long time since I have seen that many.

The first local to welcome me was a large snake I almost stepped on. We had stopped at the information center right off the highway I never saw the snake until my husband started pushing me out of the way. When I finally saw it I ran screaming like a little girl and made my husband go back and take a picture.  That was the only snake we saw.  The highest the temperature got during the day was 62 and the lows were in the high 30's. So it was still a little cool for snakes.  I had read that the park has lots of wild Javelinas. We only saw 2 in a dry creek bed by the Ranger Station. Lots of birds,1 little white mouse that decided to come check out our campfire one night.  We hiked up to an old uranium mine and an old magnesum mine.  The uranium mine was blocked off but the magnesium mine was open a little bit. My husband noticed around the outside of the mine looked like a large cat litter box. I didn't stay around long enough to find out. I got out of there a back to the car. Lol

The closet camper to us was a mile away.

I had an amazing time. I highly recommend the state park if you like being outdoors and away from people. Getting to spend quality time with my husband with no children or electronics is worth more than anything to me.

Sounds great.  Thanks for the info.  I believe Big Bend will be our first destination.
