Title: Managed a one nighter.
Post by: whoofit on March 01, 2015, 07:48:01 PM
[p]First trip out with the 16DB. All went well even in a little snow covered roads. Got to 6F last night and it stayed real toasty on LP. Heater ran at 65% duty cycle at 4am in case this is useful to some. Kept it close to home at around an hours drive to the NH border in Ashby MA. Dog friendly and even leashless this time of year which we enjoyed. Figured I'd post some pics.[/p][p]
interesting how cozy everyone's Camplite looks, even this one at 6°.
Leslie it does well. There are many areas for improvement too. Foam plugs for some of those side vents and the roof vents, foam spray coat for the under side of the floor and such. We were pleased to have no condensation bar a little on the bathroom floor by the shower, Zero on the windows that is the bane of the old single pane crank out types of windows.

I slept in shorts only. The dog was a little more adventurous there....heh
Dig those wacky '13 stab jacks !
They deploy quick and dirty but I think "jacks" is a little too much to describe these stabs. We'll see how these fare for a few more trips before replacing them with scissors. For this trip they worked as advertised. And they may stick around for the duration. They are light.

[p]Sure is! The redheads name is Loocy Loo. She is a Viszla mix. A rescue dog. We think Viszla/Beagle so we call her a Veagle.[/p][p]
[/p][p]That is assuming you did not misspell bedhead for redhead. In that case it would be some chick that wandered in off the trails.....lol

[p]So after this trip we are wondering what the heck we will do with all the storage in this trailer. Two armfulls worth of stuff each and we were on the road. Don't think we even had 100lbs of gear in her.

This should work out famously. Life is good....so far.[/p][p]
[/p][p]And to add, we managed 14 mpg on this trip following advice given in a previous post, this up from 11 mpg, thanks for the tips and advice while hauling![/p]

Well now, those photos are inspirational. I'm very impressed. That old saying about "lighting a candle instead of cursing the darkness" comes to mind.

Sean, thanks. Was really worried about slowing down on those icy roads...!

We love the winter. It brings peace and calm (especially at the campgrounds) and winter sports. Sort of like a reset button. Here's a couple pics of previous winter trips just for fun. I felt a tad bit guilty of the luxury this time out in the trailer. But I'll get over that just fine... 8-)[/p][p]

Those trips remind me of my guiding days out on the trails...
It was never that bad, but I do remember a night where we went to bed and everything was normal. No predicted weather, just the cold. Then we wake up to at least a foot of snow on the ground. That was fun :)

Oh, a Guide? Patience of a Saint, senses of a Grizzly and skills beyond belief. That MUST have been fun with the right clientele. Often times I'll try to pick the snow storms to get out into but I'm 49 now. Time to grow up so she says... hence the trailer.

Ha, yeah thats why I compromised and we settled on the pop up. With a little one (well 3 years old now) running around we wanted to make life a bit easier but we werent ready to go to a full trailer yet.

The guide days were interesting, I mostly guided introductory trips for 20 somethings so it was like herding cats sometimes :) No one knew what they were in for so of course I had the pleasure of packing in twice as much gear simply because I knew something would be left behind. Its was as reliable as the sun each morning. I cant wait until the little one gets old enough to go on a real backpacking trip. I also had the pleasure of doing a decent amount of rock climbing (mostly top roping for the intro trip), some sea kayaking and caving, and my colleagues even convinced me to go on a whitewater kayak trip. I miss those days, they were far too long ago and life tends to get in the way too quickly these days.

I was guided once as a kid by a pro. I felt so dang useless it lit a fire under me. It was in Maine on a hunt with my Dad. He was probably a guides worst nightmare come to think of it!

My youngest is my son. He's 22 now. There is no substitute for dirt time. In the beginning (6 maybe?) I carried all his stuff for him. Then as he surpassed me in stamina I loaded him up with all my old heavy gear that I upgraded from....as a "gift" just so I can keep up!

Here's my kid last summer on some hurricane damaged trail in NH. The trail was closed but we had no option at that point in our 3 night journey. Fording that washed out river was on of the hardest, most technical, things I've done. Nothing too scary like climbing so far.[/p][p]

We're tent camping at a KOA with our youngest, not yet potty-trained.  It's a hot day so we three head to the pool for a dip.  Oh sure, we laugh now remembering Hubby nosediving for elusive turds on the bottom.  Wasn't too funny at the time...me, afraid we'd be found out; Hubby...well you can understand why he wasn't laughing.  We couldn't take the Boy anywhere...he pooped all the time (or so it seemed!).

[p]WOW! You must know my April? She said as you did above with the same AUTHORITY even.... ;) I agree of course. But you can't blame a guy for working all the angles now can you?[/p][p]
[/p][p]I do hope for Grandkids some day. It appears we may have a wedding soon. My daughter graduated college with a boy she met there. She went into her field and he went to DC to study at Georgetown, and to become a man. He'll be finishing this year and they managed to stay together through the separation. So here's to hoping![/p][p]
[/p][p]Your Granddaughter sounds like she is the apple of your eye. I always like to hear these. Warms the heart.[/p][p]

Our world desperately needs more young Men, like you Sean, who are willing to step up to the difficult but high calling of being a good Father.  No greater calling exists.

@gwbushhog Thank you for those kind words. I dont think I can put into words how they hit so close to home without sounding too sappy. I was lucky enough to have a father who shared a lot of these same adventures with me, and has always been an amazing role model. I am just happy that I get a chance to continue the tradition, and I hope to be even half the man he is.
