Title: Maine trip May 8. Looking for recommandation
Post by: gnies on February 10, 2015, 10:10:58 AM
Hi everyone, I was planning to do a trip to Maine on May 8 to 10. All campground seem to open only the following weekend. The goal of my trip is to pickup some online order that I will get shipped to Houlton. I was looking for recommandation of where I could go with my camper, are we allow to go to Wal Mart in Houlton?   I would prefer a campground if there is one open. I looked at Baxter State Park and it open on May 15 and My Brother's Place (I already went there) and according to their Web Site they open May 10th. Also looking for recommandation of activity to do that is not to far away from there.

Thank you!

Ha! At the rate we're going up here in the NE there may still be snow on the ground on May 8th.

Paul:

After spending several days at Acadia National Park, we stopped at this state park near Camden for the night: http://www.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/doc/parksearch/index.pl?search_radio=1&state_park=14&historic_site=&public_reserved_land=&shared_use_trails=&town=&distance=&submit=Go+%BB

The website says it is open year round. It was very rustic but not on the water. I suspect that other state parks nearer to Houlton may also be open year round. Maine is a big state.

Camden is a bit too far from Houlton for me, trying to stay closer as possible, but thank you for the suggestion. Worst case there is a Wal Mart in Houlton I could do, do you know if we are allow to do this? I wonder what they will tell at the border if I tell them that I am going to do camping at Wal Mart? Do they care?

EDIT: Thank you for sharing that website I am looking if there is another state park near Houlton, I've identified one in Presque Iles so far

EDIT2: The one in Presque Iles you can only book from May 18th  :(

Paul:

Walmart has a website that covers their store camping policies. Some stores indicate that they do not allow camping, probably because of local law. But even if the store is listed as allowing camping it is always best to call the store first. I did this once and the person who answered the phone immediately said, yes but camp on the west side of the lot. Easy.
