Title: Table Rock State Park SC
Post by: admin on January 16, 2015, 01:49:42 PM
The family and I will be heading to Table Rock State Park, SC at the end of March. For nearly the same price as NC state parks the sites come with water and electric :) Looks to be a fun little get away.

Any thoughts?

Sounds lovely. Sean, do you know what the temperatures are expected to be that time of year? Would a Camplite need to be winterized?

It looks to be in the upper 60's for highs and 40's for the lows. To me thats perfect camping weather :)

As of right now we are planning on heading down there for the 27th and leaving on the 29th.

We spent a few days at Table Rock in October 2013. The campground was probably only half full. It was chilly at night, very pleasant during the day. Campsites are gravel, some are more level than others, but they are perfectly adequate. Hiking was very enjoyable and especially interesting from geologic point of view. A lot of it, however, is very strenuous--especially the hike to the top of Table Mountain. Carrick Creek Nature Trail is pretty easy, but still very interesting. In any case, we really enjoyed it and will certainly go back (it's only about an hour's drive from Asheville).

Table Rock looks incredible!  Count us in....that is, if we survive this Valentine's weekend first ever 'shake-down' cruise in our new LL!  Here in Florida, this weekend is supposed to be the coldest temps yet this winter....we're gonna freeze our chocks off, I fear.

Thanks, exploringcarolina, for posting these pictures and resurrecting Sean's great idea!  Shovelhead, don't forget to bring 'Frenchie'!

Rt. 11 is a very scenic road. Photos taken today were all at Table Rock SP except for the waterfall shot on Rt. 11, Wildcat Branch Falls. They have other falls we did not see in the Table Rock area today. I need a better camera with manual mode & tripod to do justice to waterfalls shots.

I will be staying Lot 028, arriving March 26, leaving March 29. My girls, beagle X and shiba inu X, will be accompanying me. Looking forward to meeting everybody.

BTW, many lots are very narrow, some only 8 feet wide. In addition to checking length, you might also check the width, if you want to use a slide-out or a tip-out bunk, like me.

I tend to forget about looking at the L and W of the sites. The QS can fit just about any site that allows a trailer.

It also sounds like it will be a dog owners meet up as well. We will have out Lab mix (Remi) with us as well :)

Thanks Leslie for the heads up.  I didnt read the width as well.  I was able to call and have my reservation changed to site#10.  OBTW if you cancel even today it's nearly $25 non-refundable.  Hence my reason to call reservations and have them change it rather then cancel and create a new reservation. One last note and I dont know have much a "slight" grade is but they do list the grade on the reservation site.
I hate sleeping on my head...

I couldnt agree more. I had a trip where it took me at least two nights of waking up with a splitting headache to figure out I was sleeping with my head slightly down hill. It wasnt noticable while laying down awake, but man I was hurting each morning with a headache and even some dizziness after standing up.

We stay at SC State Parks often. When we need to change a site, call the local campground office resulting little or no charge. In the past when something came up and we could not camp on a reserved date, called the local campground office to transfer the reservations to another date with little or no charge. We always make the initial reservations with Reserve America, unless we are 24 hours or less from the arrival date, then we deal directly with the campground office.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I have stayed at a campsite that had a grade. I used leveling pads to even the trailer side to side, and raising and lowering the tongue to make it level front to back. The only trick is not to use stabilizing jacks for leveling. They are only there to make moving around inside more comfortable and less rocky.

Ah - the other thing to remember is to take the leveling pads when you leave. :(

I believe the listed length applies to the RV, because they also say there is room for one or two vehicles. Who knew we would be arranging play dates for our dogs?

My girls are compatible with big or little dogs, just so long as they like to play!

Here's an example of one site:

Stepped off site 037 loop A earlier this week during my scouting trip.

It's 60' from the road to the back of the campsite and wide enough for two pickups to park side by side for 60'.

Description says:
Site Length: 30'
Maximum Vehicle length: 30'
Site Width: 13'

Vehicle length is the 30' camper length and also allows for TV & car or pickup.

The only restriction I see is the alert posted on the reservation site:

"Firewood Alert: Because of the seriousness of a potential infestation from the Emerald Ash Borer, we are requesting that no firewood be brought into South Carolina State Parks from outside of the state."

I know the ranger stations generally sell bundles of firewood, as well as local shops around the area (I assume). It gets a bit expensive to buy firewood in those little bundles considering how quickly the can burn. However, campfires are a part of camping for me so its money well spent :)

[p]It is money well spent. I will admit to bringing a duffel bag full of wood from home to a very local campground where any insects would already be there, but even then it pretty much lasts for a brief evening fire and then the morning. Certainly doesn't cover an evening long burn, but it's a good hedge against arriving late and the camp hosts have shut down for the night.[/p][p]
[/p][p]I also once resorted to going to Home Depot and getting a bundle of short construction stakes, which are just 1x1/2's about 18" long. Less than $10 a bundle, makes a good supply of kindling and nobody can complain about you bringing in diseased wood. Definitely for ambiance fire only, or for starting. But far better than nothing.[/p][p]

I'm in for a "potluck" supper.

GW your daughter needs to prepare to meet Bella.  She  loves kids and will try to lick their face off.  In exchange she expects vigorous belly rubs, and scratches.  Oh they will need a gas mask.  If you have a bully you will understand.  I've been on the lookout for a Bully playmate for Bella but no success at the rescue sites.  The breeder we got her from moved away and there are few French Bulldog breeder around.  :-(

I watched the Westminster show, both nights. My dog, which I have been calling a beagle X, looks exactly like the harrier hound that was on the first night. Is it possible that someone in Kentucky threw away a harrier hound to run the streets just to come very close to starving to death? Poor Daisy has had some tough times to survive. At least now she doesn't have to worry about keeping warm and having enough to eat, although she is very food-driven.

People now tell me how cute she is, and can't believe she languished in a kennel at an animal shelter up to the last day before she was to be euthanized.

It is difficult to understand how cruel so many have become to the most vulnerable in our society: the elderly, children (including babes in the womb) and animals.  Like Daisy, Reba was about to be put-down...got her for 5 bucks (fixed, chipped, fully vaccinated, supply of food) with 30 day money-back guarantee.  She has been, I do not exaggerate, the best dog I've ever known and as I've shared before, my affection for her runs deep.  To everyone else, she was worthless, of a mix-breed type reputed as hopelessly dangerous by a sensationally-driven, exploitive media supported by poorly-informed followers.

What a difference you, Leslie, have made in Daisy's life....a beagle (?) harrier hound mix deemed worthless by everyone else....BUT YOU!  Bless you for caring....if only there were more.....

I am in for the weekend , but I am careful about where I go hiking. I have bad arthritis in my right knee. Uphill, fine. Going downhill, like going down a flight of stairs, not so fine.

@gwbushhog we are excited about hiking to summit Table Rock that weekend. My 3 year old is such a trooper that she actually kept up when we hiked a few of the tough trails at South Mountains SP. However this time I'm coming prepared with a kid carrier backpack so she doesnt end up on my shoulders like last time :)

Well, now I've gone and done it!!  Didn't think there would be any takers for the challenging Table Rock mountain hike, but decided to ask.... and if there were any, then figured that we'd best start training now.  (While we don't need knee replacement, our youngest is 21 years older than Sean's child!)  So now that I've done opened this 'can of worms' (and I'm skeered just a little of this hike)....how about kayaking and fishing?

We have done some local kayaking with the youngster but we weren't planning on loading them up for this trip. Based on its reputation though I could see this being a repeat destination, and I'm sure at some point the kayaks will be in tow :)

Hope you fair better then me Charlie.  My TKR didnt go too well.  First I saw Elvis in the recovery room.  I stopped breathing twice and they had to shock me both times.   Then they sent me home too early (long story).  Then the physical terrorist tried to cripple me (again a long story)  They  had to take me back in and redo the TKR during my rehab.  The knee is functional, I walk without pain, slightly diminished mobility .  My biggest complaint is that I cant  do what I did before the TKR.  Hiking, climbing, kneeling, running.  Not all the surgery, some to other issues.  Just to say it didnt go as well as I had hoped.  Now the left is really painful.  I'm looking into this device. I'm not sure if it's "Snake Oil"  but right now I'm up for anything to avoid another TKR.

OK, let's if I can post with this tiny iPhone from the hospital. If not I 'll write with laptop pater. So far my recovery is going great. I'll get released tmw. BIG CAUTION on the Willow thing. I've seen it advertised and looked at their web site. The only thing it can be is heat. No matter how well controlled and applied, heat is not the answer. Nor are topical creams like Blue Emu, Austrailian stuff, etc. Save your money. Some times you just have to bite the bullet, depending on your medical situation . PM if you need a recommendation

This seems to be the season for surgery. I am stuck in Louisville because I had to see my dermatologist. I had to have 3 precancerous spots taken out. Now, due to snow and ice, it is difficult to get around. I think a couple more of us here on the board will be having surgery soon, as well.

I hope charliem has a speedy recovery. Too bad shovelhead had so many complications. I have heard similar stories, but most people are really happy they had it done.

So shovelhead is worried about what to do... Well, so far we are going to have a potluck dinner and a campfire, and some will take on the challenge of hiking the mountain. I am interested in seeing everybody else's campers. You show me yours, and I'll show you mine! So we need to have an Open House.

My dogs love to explore new places, so we will check out all the places in the park that are fairly easy to access with a bad knee. Weather permitting, I might like to spend some quiet time on the shore of the lake. I have not been to this part of SC before, so I might want to check out the area.

For the potluck dinner do we want to start a list of what you'll be bringing?  I'll start with my "specialty" dish.  "Hobo Bean Casserole"   4 types of beans with peperoni, mild sausage, ground chuck, in a tomato sauce. Plus a few other goodies.  Now I'm really hungry.

Not sure if anyone else has received an email yet, but I was able to pre-register today. Apparently it makes check in much faster since it allows you to print off a barcoded page with all the important check in details.

For me, it begins. Tomorrow I start driving to Florida to pick up my Camplite and spend a couple of days there. Then I drive to Table Rock, arriving on Thursday.

See you soon!

Thanks, we will try to get over.  I was trying to judge how full the campground could possibly become, to determine when to make reservations, around some scheduling conflicts.  Thanks for reply.

We are registered site A23 and will stay two days, and possibly into Monday and Tuesday.  We hope to participate in the potluck if that is OK.  What is needed?  Grilled veggies, meats, rice?

We have RVd, had our 14dbs less than one year, so I will see how my winterization fared as I prep it starting------- now.  Hopefully it will be fine , if not, you all can tell me how to make repairs.

I will be bringing my lovely wife, and a beautiful very senior Cairn Terrier, a guitar and song books, and a small assortment of high tech flashlights.  Gotta have my lights.  Very cool, pumped.  We were actively looking to get out somewhere, so this is great.

Just uncovered the camplite.  Will give it a tow in the next day or so and check out all the systems.  We are predicted for snow flurries Friday to Saturday, so we will be running from that.

How about some we bring some loafs of homemade bread, and some greenery, such as broccoli, celery and carrots.

Hi All,

I'm very sad to say that we do, indeed, have a conflict this weekend and will not be able to get to Table Rock. Know you'll have a lot of fun and we wish we could be there.

There are lots of great places to camp in our Asheville "neighborhood" so anytime there's an interest in doing this again anywhere nearby, we'll do our level best join in.

Have a great time this weekend and please report back on how things went.

Regards,

Bill

You just can't take me anywhere, so it seems!

Confession time:  I scared my Husband on our first time out with new Axxess over Valentine's weekend, 5-6 weeks back.  He reported back on this forum, about the Axx and the Ram, but didn't tell ya'll that I ruined our weekend when I became sick, somewhat out of the blue.  It scared him (I think) and I believe that for now, he does not want to be out of town with me away from doc/hospital.  Can't blame him.  Been in tests since then with final results just received today.   I've been grounded, so to speak, for duration of doctor's prescribed treatments (next 8 weeks). After that, all systems go!

But for Table Rock SC event, we are very sorry and hugely disappointed, but we will not be able to attend after all.  I'm trying to look for the silver lining and wondering how not to think of each of you special people and what we have missed as the weekend approaches.  Decided that this will give us a chance to take my own silly advice to Paul of this forum when I suggested that he  "just camp...in the driveway!"  Maybe we'll grill a couple of steaks there too! :)

Liv Life to the fullest and blessed be!
Good idea to grill some steak! There is like 7 foot of snow in my backyard not sure I'll be able to grill steak outside but if you can do it!  :) I would have loved to participate to the gathering but my Camplite is in storage until May 2, and there is too much snow here to even think of camping!

You don't even see my deck on this picture it's all covered with snow!
You probably know this, if you have reservations and can't camp on a reserved date, SC State Parks will let you transfer your reservations to another date within an 11 month window for minimal charge.  Just call directly to the SP location office where reservations are made and let them change the date.

Table Rock State Pack is like 22 hour drive for me so a bit far away. It would be nice next time to do a gathering in Maine that would be really doable for me!
