Title: How do we tell Lurkers from real participants?
Post by: nmken on August 13, 2014, 05:48:12 PM
[p]A recent article from the car sharing business, one business attempting to disrupt another - such dirty tactics I would not think any professional organization would condone.[/p][p]
[/p][p][a href="http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/11/technology/uber-fake-ride-requests-lyft/"]http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/11/technology/uber-fake-ride-requests-lyft/[/a] [/p][p]
[/p][p]But I have to wonder about uncharacteristically bad comments coming from folks that never provide follow up or something as simple as photographic proof...[/p][p]
[/p][p]How possible is it these are not valid?  [/p][p]
[/p][p]I'd love a way to filter them out ;([/p]

So far, the negative comments on this site have been very plausible, and usually along the lines of defects shortly after purchasing the unit.  I myself have posted such a message.  Over time, it starts to become obvious.  I don't think we've had any here so far.

On the other hand, if you peruse the Good Sam forums, you will often find people there that either just have an axe to grind, or they just love to be negative.  That is what is so nice about this forum, people with a negative comment have been justified making them so far.  The LivinLite products are not cheap, especially compared to much of the competition, so when the teething problems occur, especially those that show poor quality control, people tend to get frustrated (including myself).

I dont think you will ever find a way to filter out the "trolls" beyond personal your own personal opinion. Our internet lives have become filled with reviews, articles, forums, etc where the anonymity of the internet has made it so easy to get false information published. I think most people develop their own sense of what the believe and what they dont.
For example I rarely put much stock in online reviews with all 5 stars nor do I care much about all 1 stars. They have their place but in my mind they are weighted less than anything in between , because I find if someone gives a thoughtful review its generally going to be in the 2-4 star range.
Same goes for online forums. I look for the activity of the user. Are they brand new? Have they continued to respond? How long ago was the post? If they came in, dropped some negative comments and were never seen again I can only assume it wasn't that big of a deal for them.

For me it boils down to my gut reaction. Plus I have faith in the other mods around here. If things get out of hand with someone abusing the system we have steps that can be taken to try to mitigate the impact.
