Title: "Traction Devices" required
Post by: pinstriper on March 11, 2014, 11:51:16 PM
[p]I am separated from the Pacific Ocean by 90 minutes of driving, which at this time of year some of the passes have traction device required zones in the passes, all at 1200' or lower.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Right now I'm petrified at the prospect of hauling even a light weight trailer over these passes, but in any case, what does The Law require as far as traction devices on the trailer tires ? Anything ? Prohibited altogether ? Much ado about nothing ?[/p][p]
[/p][p]I'd like to know the statutory answer as well as what folks actually do/avoid.[/p][p]
[/p][p]TIA[/p]

IMO I'd say you should go directly to the source for any statutory answers. I know we have many smart users on these boards but I wouldn't put any real trust in what I read online when it comes to legal matters. I live on the east coast in NC and I know laws can change from state to state and even county to county. I would bet the local highway patrol or DMV should be able to put your mind at ease.

To your other question, I can't say I've ever been on a road that required a traction device. Maybe a few that I should have had some additional traction, but thats a whole other story :)

Yeah, sorry, the signs are all over the place out here in mountain passes (even coast where the high point can be under 1k'), I just thought folks would know what it meant. Didn't reckon on a bunch of flatlanders !

I couldn't find anything at the ODOT website is why I asked here, but I didn't do but a cursory/lazy scan. And I was really interested in what folks actual experience was. Perhaps some of the 4-season campers from up northaways will share their experience of towing on winter roads.

[/p][p]A more diligent search of [a href="http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/minimum-chain-requirements.asp"]the ODOT website[/a] turns up this:[/p][p]
[/p][p]When towing, chains must also be on one tire on each side of one axle of a trailer that is equipped with a brake. Traction tires may be used in place of chains when the vehicle is not towing or being towed.[/p][p]So, a set of cable chains can be thrown under the pass-through and put them on if conditions require.[/p][p]
