Title: Tongue Weight 8.0
Post by: chopper on June 07, 2016, 11:44:01 AM
Still contemplating getting the 8.1. The tongue weight is listed at 110 lb. Can anyone tell me if this is accurate in real use?  Our Ford Flex can handle 200lbs and we want to make sure it isn't going to be an issue. We will be doing the Rockies.

Hey @chopper, the tongue weight is highly dependant on the options you choose. Having a battery, propane, and other accessories on or near the tongue will impact the weight. The way you load the rest of the trailer will also add to or possible offset the weight on the tongue. So the short answer is that yes the listed weight is a good general idea but the final weight is entirely different in each situation.

My personal opinion is that you should have no problem at all with the 8.1 behind the Ford Flex. Even if you are tackling the Rockies it should be able to handle it with ease.
Keep in mind I've towed my loaded 10.0 with a 4cyl Jeep Wrangler though. I wouldnt have taken it over the mountains but the QS tent campers can be towed by just about anything.

You don't mention the model Flex you have, the engine, or other options. From my reading it looks like the 200# rating would be without the tow package. I would recommend looking into the tow package. It usually includes hitch and cooling upgrades, specifically a transmission fluid cooler, that will be needed in the Rockies. A properly outfitted Flex should be more than adequate for the 8.1.

Sorry, did leave out important info. It's a 6 cyl AWD 2014 and we will be adding the transmission cooler and possibly an engine cooler. We pack light so hopefully this will work

If it includes a 2" Class III receiver you should be good to go.
