Title: Tacoma Towing 21RBS
Post by: charliem on September 28, 2015, 01:38:27 AM
Preliminary results from my western towing test are in. When I bought the 21RBS I selected the 4.0L Toyota Tacoma as a TV. In anticipation of western high altitude towing I added the TRD supercharger (not turbocharger) to mitigate the loss of performance expected with a naturally aspirated engine. The first test was the climb up Colorado's Loveland Pass on I-70 to the east portal of Eisenhower tunnel.  The grade was a relatively straight 6% up to 11,158 feet. I was able to easily maintain 60MPH. The harder test was California's Tioga pass on HWY 120 from the east. Though not as high it was a 2.4 mile winding climb of 8% to 9,948 feet. I was able to maintain 40 MPH (fast enough given the road geometry) in 2nd gear at 3400 RPM, with some acceleration capability remaining. Transmission oil temperatures ranged around 235F. Unfortunately I have no direct comparison with/without the SC, but it seems to be working.

Good report. Going from the lowlands of FL to the highlands of CO, I'll bet your lungs could have used a supercharger too.

That's why we go back. We camped for a week at 8650' with no effects except clean fresh air, lots of sunshine, and a good workout for my new knees. The propane appliances even worked!
