Title: Proper QS 10.0 tire inflation
Post by: dhs on April 07, 2014, 11:06:04 PM
Pretty basic question: what is the proper tire inflation for a QS 10.0 with the original tires?  When I bought the trailer it had 45 PSI in the tires.  My drive from Portland to Seattle was fine, but my mileage sucked.  I think the manual states 80 PSI, which is the max for the tires as well.  So before I head off on a long trip, what's the right number?

[p]When I purchased our camper five years ago the tires were inflated at 80 psi. When I replaced the tires at three years, the folks at the tire shop examined my tires and noted normal expected wear. They asked about my trailer weight and it has actually been constant. And they recommended 80 psi. [/p]

Sounds good, thanks.

How many miles were on the tires when you replaced them?

I replace tires after three years of use or depending on wear. Camp Log is in the camper and I am in the process of moving.

Just curious...

...is there not a placard on the trailer showing the installed tire size and recommended pressures?

And/or a reference to it in your owner's manual?

If so, that would be a good place to start.

MY 21BHS (a different animal, I know) shows 50 psi, which in my case happens to be the maximum shown on the sidewall.

FWIW, there's an extensive (and exhaustive) thread on the topic over on the AirForums site, including recommendations from some actual experts:

Damn, I totally forgot to check the tag on the trailer tongue.  80PSI it is...

80 psi. When I bought the Camper the Dealer rep went over all placards and also reviewed information about towing it home. Since I lived about 60 mile away he advised to stop and to check tires and lug nuts. The Dealer rep spent about an hour and a half reviewing info and setting up the camper.

I almost had to beg my dealer to open the trailer up so that I could inspect it. I am glad I did because I found a rip in my bench seat cushion and my mattress. And the bracket to my LP tank wasn't even attached to the trailer. It was sitting inside of the box cozy as can be. I also had to attach that myself because the dealer said they wouldn't do it without a charge.

I'm guessing that's exactly why they didn't want you to open it up. Sounds pretty shady to me. An hour long (or more) walkthrough is pretty standard when you buy an RV. It's for your education and to find any issues.

Before I picked up my camper my dealer contacted me and advised me of hitch ball size and height, asked if I had a 4 pin flat style wiring connection and extension. Also advised me of the set up video and instructions on the Livinlite web site. Advised me to bring a jack for the trailer and a lug wrench. On pickup went thru the camper and set up instructions and set up the camper. They also gave me some tips on the drive home and provided me a print out of the owners manual and a dvd of the setup instructions. When I first visited the dealer when the campers arrived, some of the salesman were setting them up and maint. folks were checking the campers out.

Thats exactly what I would expect to happen with a good dealer

Here's a tougher one - what's the correct PSI for the larger off road tires? Tongue says 80 PSI, but when I got them new they measured 50 PSI.  Any ideas? Split the difference, or stick with 50 psi?

What is the max psi on the tire? For off road use I would carry an air compressor and let some air out on the trail and put back to max tire psi on the road.

The numbers on the tongue refer to the particular tires also listed on the tongue. Use the numbers on the tires actually on the camper, assuming the tires are rated to carry the required load. Generally load range C tires are specified at 50 psi, load range D at 65 psi. 80 psi seems a bit high, maybe for load range E tires which are not normally found on small campers.

P.S. What size tires are stock on the QS? LL's website implies tiny 12 inchers. If true, is it possible they do require 80 psi? Still, I'd go by the max inflation on the tire sidewall you're using.

Good point about going with the tire spec. We have the offroad 14 inch and LivinLite did not change the tongue sticker to match them. Lots of live-n-learn with these trailers. Our max is 65 and that's what we've been using.

There are videos on the features and construction (marketing) of the CL and there are a pair on setup of the QS.
