Click to enlarge and you can see tail in the grasses.

On this photo, you can see the black forked tongue if you look close.

At Inks Lake in the fall, we were trail running with our terrier.  She passed the Diamondback before we saw it coiled half way on the trail.  It was bigger than the one we saw last week.  How the dog who passed the snake twice, second time trying to get back to us, didn't get bitten... a Godsend.  It didn't rattle and move off the trail until I tried to get a better look at it.  Same case with the one in Caprock.  Needless to say, our two dogs that camp with us got the rattlesnake vaccine after that first encounter.

I like snakes (spiders are what get me wiggy).  I taught with them when younger... rat snakes, hognose, kings... but the poisonous ones are super scary.

INKS LAKE?!  What a blast from the past!  We use to camp at Inks Lake as a kid and LOVED IT! (Not sure where Caprock is.)

You mention rattlesnake vaccine for dogs?.  This is first I've heard of such.  Can you tells us more?  So glad your terrier cleared the diamondback!

It's a two shot initial process, one and then another about 4 weeks later.  Requires a booster each year, and in cases where the dog has year-round exposure, the booster is given every six months. Emergency treatment is still needed with the vaccine, but chances of death are lessened.  We certainly feel better about our long hikes and trail runs now that they are more protected.

P.S. I've had dogs get bitten by Copperheads (and have known a few people too).  They've always swelled up, but been fine in the long run.

Australia is on the list of places not to visit. Every animal there is poisonous or venomous and will kill you on land and sea.  dropbears are a huge problem too ...so I heard...  ;)

[/quote]The only thing more dangerous in Canada is the healthcare system....oh, wait....not true anymore.

All kidding aside, (may it never be so!), and if Florida is so 'dangerous', why are our best RV spots occupied, (some year round  >:D) by so many of our Canadian neighbors?
Hmmm?  Not that we don't appreciate you, 'cuz we do!  But just every once in awhile, it would be nice to get an oceanfront spot at a State Park rate.

P.S. Okay, I'll ask you, my Northern Friend......what the heck is a 'dropbear'?  (I have a sense I'll regret asking.)  :)

OMG, I learned something new today.

Amazing the things you find out there.

When I first heard of dropbears I thought it was hilarious.

Or maybe that's what Aussies want...for tourists to think they arent real and keep their tourism economy going...  (adjusts tinfoil hat)

The only snakes we have around here are garter snakes.
Lots at the Narcisse snake dens.  http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/news/140626-narcisse-snake-dens-vin
Now to imagine if those were cottonmouths I think it would be perfectly acceptable to nuke the dens from orbit.
