Anode rod on Suburban water heater

Glad I pulled it out, although not bad after a couple of years.  Here is what it looked like:

I wish I had purchased the water flush tool found here to get the crap out of the tank, but I didn't have it so I just tried to force as much water into the tank as possible to flush it out.

Final bit of information I learned in the process:  (a) wrap the teflon tape clockwise:  (b) don't wrap all of the inside threads with tape (I left three threads open metal); and (c) I tried not to over-tighten-just enough to be snug and not leak.

Thought about replacing it, but figured as long as there was magnesium left to "sacrifice", it was getting the job done.

Maybe next year...
