Adirondacks?

We live in NW Connecticut and camped at Lake George north of Hague and a USFS campground near Ticonderoga last year. We definitely want to try the area west of there, near Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. I camped there a hundred years ago and our site overlooked a beautiful lake. Would like to see that area again.

So, count me in.

Eastern PA for us.  Years ago we camped at Cranberry Lake and that is about as far west as you can get in the Daks.

I will follow this thread I probably won't be able to make it because it's a bit far away from me, about 11h of drive according to google maps, but depending on the dates I might try to come so I'll keep reading

I guess it all boils down to what kind of camping you are looking at.

If you want power the state site at Macomb Reservation has power sites available but they are not the ones that are by the water. *** one note at this site Do NOT ever get site 50. It is down in a hole and very uneven***

If you want unimproved by lots of water there is the State sites at AuSable Point. This is close to the city of Plattsburgh for shopping.

If you want total rural the State site at Newcomb NY is called Lake Harris. This is one of my favorite campgrounds. It is a bit of a drive off the highway and there is NO cell service. Most sites are on the water. You can canoe from Lake Harris to the Hudson river. Many hiking trails into the high peaks are in this area.

I am from Lake Placid. The only real camping around there is in Wilmington NY. There is a small state campsite there and 2 rather expensive private ones. (like all things Lake Placid)

David. I do know about the meet up. Oddly enough I camp every year on the 4th of July at my parents house in Lake Placid. So that is a weekend I just cant make. Sorry.

We are working out our trip from NE Ohio to Maine for the Acadia NP meet up. Sounds like there are a lot of wonderful spots to camp! Are there any don't miss areas that we can whittle this down to?

If you give me an idea the route you are using through NY I can let you know more as well as what you are looking for. If you want busy tourist than Lake Placid, Lake George or Old Forge are the big ones. If you like nature and museums then Blue Mountain Lake is one of the most beautiful areas with a museum about the Adirondacks. Tupper Lake has The Wild Center that is a Must see natural history center.

Probably want to stay away from the high-traffic tourist areas, so maybe Blue Mountain Lake and Tupper Lake would be good. As far as the routes we plan to take through NY, we'll likely take I-90 one way and then I-86 the other direction (not sure yet which one we'll take on the way out and which one on the way back.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!). Also, would there be any benefit to heading north up near the Canadian border along Hwy 11? Are there good places to see and campgrounds to go to up there? If we went that way (say on the way out to Maine), then we would probably work our way down to Montpelier, VT and then take Hwy 2 east over to Bangor, ME. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed! Thanks everyone!

One route, a relatively direct one, would take you across 90 to 87 north then to US Route 4 through Rutland VT and Woodstock. That way would take you past the Quechee Gorge which is pretty cool. There's a big KOA there and a State campground also.  If you do travel that route you'll pass within 3 miles of my house, you could stop for coffee.  

If you go the northern routes, Burlington Vt and Stowe Vt are good, you could stop by the Ben and Jerry's Factory for a tour and some free ice cream.  How bad could that be?  

Along I-90 in between Rochester and Syracuse is a place called Belhurst Castle right on the Finger Lakes. It's a really cool place, not really a camping place but it has hidden wine taps throughout the building so, really, hidden wine taps, free wine, enough said.

I'll try to think of more and post when my feeble mind remembers.

If you go up along 11 the place to go is Robert Moses State Park in Massena. It is a beautiful camp ground on an island rite in the middle of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. It is a very nice campground and some sites have power. You get to see the large ships going up the canal and you are rite near one of the locks. The locks are free and so is the tour of the big hydro station rite there.

My family has property there.  I miss being up there, but not the winters, or having to shovel your way to the out house in November during hunting season.   I hope you all find a place to meet up and enjoy the beautiful country up that way.

Hi David..I was just browsing and saw your post.  We live in Putnam, NY, just south of Ticonderoga.  Our town is actually bordered by both Lake George and Lake Champlain. There is lots of wonderful camping here.  I suspect your stayed at Roger's Rock State Campgound on Lake George (no USFS sties around here), about 6 miles south of Ti (local name) on Rt 9N.  It's a great place with access to Lake George and lots of hiking.  About that same distance going west of Ti on Rt 74, you go up in the mountains to Putnam Pond State Campground and access to the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness area.  Putnam Pond is a great campground with beach, water sites and some boat/canoe only access sites.  About 10 miles further west on Rt. 74 you come to Paradox Lake State campground. Not in wilderness, but great for some lake fun.  Now you're just a few miles from Schroon Lake, NY, where the state runs 2 campgrounds at Scaroon Manor and Eagle Point.  No hookups at any of these, but all have dump stations and they're all great spots to visit.  Since we border Vermont, we like to take our camper over there.  There are many beautiful small campgrounds within a short 1-2 hour drive from here. Yes, we camped at Rogers Rock and Putnam Lake last year. Both were nice places. I may try Paradox and Schroon this year, but I would also like to camp further west in the Adirondacks, maybe Cranberry Lake.

I am the organizer of the Acadia NP meetup, 4th of July weekend. How about joining us.

Also how about organizing an Adirondack meetup? I thought gawin was going to do it, but so far, no.

We camped at Cranberry Lake many times when our kids were young (We took a lightning strike there-burned my wife and I slightly and put a burn mark on the tent-the kids were unscathed).  We tented since we didn't have a camper then.  It's a beautiful spot, like most of the Adirondack lakes campgrounds.  There are lots of hiking trails out of the campground.  We used to haul a 14 ft outboard boat and that really increased our options there.  I know canoe rentals are available there.  You'll pass close to other nice state sites on your way there, like Harris Lake in Newcomb and Long Lake, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and others, depending on your route.  Our 4th of July is currently booked up, but we would enjoy a meet  up some time.  We do a bunch of island camping on the state islands in Lake George during the summer also.  Great if you have a boat--also through ReserveAmerica. What's involved in organizing an Adirondack meet up?  Maybe good for fall or next summer.
