Extended warranty, money grab?

We are picking up our new 13BHB on the weekend, when talking about the total cost the dealer asked about a seven yr. extended warranty. The price was around 1600 dollars . I'm paying big money for this new ,well made trailer and now they want even more incase it falls apart!
I would like to know what kind of experiences you have had with this, is it a money grab ?
If something needs to be fixed I have the ability to fix it, thats not an issue. What gets me is no one has confidence in the product they are making or selling.
(sorry for the rant)

Heck I never knew they offered an extended warranty not that I would have ever considered it. My dealer didn't even mention anything about it. So food for thought-you can do a heck of a lot in upgrading your camper with $1600! I don't buy extended warranties on anything I buy. I think they are a money grab myself. You will have plenty of time to make sure all is right under the normal warranty period offered by LL. I say don't spend the $1600.

P.S. Extended warranties usually have nothing to do with the manufacturer it's the dealers way of making some extra money.

It's a money grab in my opinion. Keep in mind that this is the dealer selling you a third party product, it has nothing to do with LL. If they weren't confident in the product they WOULDN'T sell you the extended warranty because it would actually cost them money  :)

Think of it like the hardware store offering you a replacement plan on the wrench you just bought... ummm.... no, thanks.

Remember, many of the components are built by other companies.  I purchased an extended warranty from Cornerstone when I purchased my camper.  It got me a better interest rate as well.  I got it for peace of mind and it has mostly paid off when my air conditioner failed and the whole unit had to be replaced.  What was supposed to cost us over $800 cost us nothing.  For most things, I do not purchase an extended warranty, but in the case of a camper, there is a a lot to fail and most likely will.  Will I get all of my money back?  Probably not, but I am already close enough that the peace of mind, especially when I am away from home, for the rest of the warranty is worth the difference.

There are other threads on this question too. The points made above are great and I would add that the trailer and components are covered by basic manufacturer warranties for 1-2 years. A lot of it comes down to

1. Negotiated cost (the cost is very negotiable)
2. Your peace of mind
3 what's covered
4 how easy it is to use
5 where it can be used
6 your comfort with repairs after the regular warranties are done
7 how much it pays for repairs.

As a last comment, if you do decide on an extended warranty, you can get them lots of places (like the Good Sam Club) and you should look up reviews of any you consider to see what others have experienced.

Decades ago I made a commitment to NEVER buy an extended warranty.

Considering  the cars and bikes and appliances bought in that time frame, I probably have between $10k and $20k "in the bank" if someday I do find myself in a position where an extended warranty would have helped.

Machines usually fail either due to manufacturing defects or wear. Most manufacturing defects occur early on, covered by the standard warranty. And wear failures tend to occur much farther down the road. Plus many wear items tend to be excluded from extended warranty coverage. So, extended warranties tend to give you coverage when you least need it - and that's how the companies make money.

Stipulated there will be anecdotal "winners". I just choose not to bet.

I agree with Fast Eddie on this one; the only item one needs to buy the extended warranty for is your cell phone. You will probably wash it as a result of it being left in a pocket, or drop it in a toilet. We were pressed pretty hard to buy the extended warranty but chose not to do so. My thought process is it is a money maker like gift cards, sell, sell, sell, if possible. I like to ask how a person is paid to determine how I buy things. If guys push too hard I start backing up on the purchase of the product as it must be junk because they are so sure I need it.

Chance are its a third party warranty, nothing to do with LL. Some extended warranties have a lot of hidden stipulations when putting in a claim, as well as a deductible. Look at the fine print.

I have had one in the past and they refused me on two claims. Both times blamed the factory and of course the factory won't pay.  A friend of mine had a issue just last month with his. Again the same B S, the factory at fault and they did not pay. Bottom line dealers get a kick back and nobody pays on any claim. This is a total rip off IMHO and experience. Stay as far away from the  extended warranty as you can.

Just like automobiles or even Walmart. No different for RV's... Most all extended warranties are through a third party insurer not the manufacturer.

I purchased a new 2002 Dodge 2500 4x4 and got the extended warranty, I never have purchased a extended warranty on a vehicle prior to that or since. Well,,,,, in the course of owning the truck for 8 years, the transmission was replaced three times, I got rid of the truck when it started acting up again after the extended warranty ran out. So, in that particular case it worked out for me, but, I still think they're money grabs, (generally speaking).

Be wary if you're thinking camplite!  [/quote]Matt,

What number are you calling? Seems my phone is working.... been on it all day.  Actually got through all the messages.
I expect you are calling the number in the old owners manual.
