Here's a simple idea for the narrow closet that works really well, a shoe holder. (sorry the pics are rotated)

We use one of these also. Funny I thought I had an original thought! lol LL owners must be alot alike! lol
Works great though and just bought another to keep close to the door so shoes won't  be in  our walking path but easy to get to when having to walk our pup!
