My neighbor is going to install my MaxAir II vent covers. I cant navigate on the CL roof nor do I do ladders. Should we place maybe some cardboard or thin plywood on the roof to lessen him moving around up there? The instructions look rather simple and I think a short time on the roof. Anything to watch for?
I was all over my roof today and it is very solid. Twas my first trip up there and I was impressed. However, to be safe, I did stay on my hands and knees the whole time in order to better spread out my weight.. @ 200lbs.
I've been on my roof a few times to see what's up there. It's very heavy aluminum, well supported by the rigid foam insulation underneath it. The first time I went up I used thin plywood, but quickly realized it isn't necessary. I'll be installing those vent covers on mine this spring too. The instructions do look simple. While he's up there, for sure have him look around at joints/seams/hardware/etc. to make sure all is well. If it's warm enough, have him give a coat of 303 Protectant to the plastic parts. It's great sunscreen for plastic.
I have also installed the Max Air vents. No problem working on the roof and I am over 200 big ones. Be careful coming down.
Do you have to cut into the trailer anywhere to install those?
Do you have to cut into the trailer anywhere to install those?
I installed the camco brand. I assume the maxxair install the same way. If you look at the vents from the roof the vents are made with a lip around the opening about an and inch and a half tall to keep water from running in. You have to drill 4 small holes in that vertical lip to install the vent, so yes there is drilling, but no not into the roof itself. Some advertise themselves as "no drilling into the roof required" but in reality they all work the same way by drilling into the vertical lip.
PS: agree with the others about the strength of the roof to support a person, but being cautious when I installed mine I crawled and sat indian style to spread my weight as much as possible.
As TLB said only drilling is in the sides of the vent. I went for the MaxAir II sense they claim they allow more airflow then version 1.
I also went with black to provide some sun blocking. I get wide awaken in a lighted room and cant sleep. I've read that some dont like the black because they dont allow light in....
Thanks
BTW, exactly which MaxAir II covers work for our vents?
From a quick re-look on Amazon, it seems there is only one Maxxair II model and the only choice you have is white, almond, black, or smoke in color. I assume you have the factory vents on your Camplite.
Word to the wise... check your roof before you buy the larger maxxair II. My BR vent was close to the sewage tank vent. I had to trim the edge at one corner to get it to fit a camco brand one which is smaller. I don't think the maxxair II would have worked on that particular vent.

Yep, factory vents. I'll take a closer look online. Seems like my first search pulled up different shaped hoods.. ?
Ah, yes, the covers come in the original version and version II. I have the original Maxxair type, but the thread was started by Shovelhead with the Maxxair II. They are different shapes, and based on what tbones noted, you'll need to check to make sure version II clears the sewer vent. Or if you have the same trailer as Shovelhead, see if his works first!
Thanks Merlin - they all seem to work with our CL air vents and the vents are pretty much standard size from what I can tell (14x14)... ordered the smoke ones today.
It doesnt look as though there is sufficient space for the vent over the bathroom (21RBS). Thats why I only ordered 2. The front vent and the vent above the fridge area has plenty of space. I'd like to find a vent cover that is smaller and use it for the bath vent.

Oops, I ordered 3 !!!

Don't cry yet. I was able to trim my camco with a utility knife. You might be able to fit yours with a bit of trimming.
I have a Dremmel...
The reason I only ordered 2 is that I didnt want to block the light in the bathroom. My CL doesnt have the skylight above the shower, I wish it did. That being said I may look for a smaller translucent cover.

Hmmm, I wonder why this one is not compatible with vents that have fans in them?
Surfsup I believe they are installing an original MaXXair which is not recommended over a high powered fan. The Maxxair II is fine over any of the high pwered fan vents.

just curious... thanks
My neighbor was kind enough to install my MaxxAir II vent covers. Went well except the vents edge rest on the goop they applied around the vents. Not directly on the roof.
There is at least a 1" wide bead around my vents. We didnt want to remove any sealant goop so the MaxxAir bottom edge is maybe 1/4 inch raised. The installation video has it sitting perfectly flat on the RV roof. However, as I watched the video its a mock up with
no sealant applied. I dont think it will be any kind of functionality issue, it's just looked odd until I saw the video again.
I'm sure my 3rd rear vent (Bathroom) has plenty of space to install a vent cover without needing to trim of vent pipes. I may install
one if I can find a "clear" plastic vent cover. I dont want to decrease the sunlight in the bath, I dont have the shower moon window :-)
EDIT****......
After reviewing the Original MaxxAir install video embedded in a previous post, this looks more like what I encountered with vent sealant.
They installed on a real RV vs a mock up. Lots of sealant and the MaxxAir seats on the sealant just a little off the roof material.
I'll let you know how mine mount up. My first vent arrived Wednesday but I refused the shipment - it was destroyed. The other two arrived yesterday undamaged - I hope to get them on tomorrow or Monday.
BTW, my first two HDs were Shovels a '67 FLH and a '80 FXEF.
Surfsup I was going to comment on the "flexibility" of the MaxxAir II covers. They feel pretty flimsy but if the material
was very rigid I think it would be a tough job getting a good fit. I think the designers knew they needed to use a plastic with
flexibility.
Cool on the Shovelheads. I love that motor. Very easy to work on and nearly indestructible.

They look great, Shovelhead..
I did take a good look at the bath fan today and the plumbing vent isn't going to be a problem with mine..
Surfsup does your 21RBS have the moon roof over the shower? Wish mine did. As far as using a vent cover over the bath vent, I agree, shoudnt be an issue. Plenty of room. Without that moon roof in the shower, I'm going with a translucent vent cover and not the black. I dont want to decrease the lighting in the bathroom.
Yep, mine has the moonroof (or skylight). I'm putting the translucent on all 3.
Yep, mine has the moonroof (or skylight). Good deal on translucent covers the black does cut down on ambient light. I went with "smoked" on my 3rd cover and the Camco version vs Maxair no reason why.....
Shovelhead, From what I can tell, the supporting roof trusses and frame for the skylight were cut and welded when the TT was a skeleton. I'm no welder, but I can't imagine trying to perform a mod that complex on a finished unit?
Kinda figured that. Now what would really be nice is the complete bath area as a skylight. Ala UPS Truck style :-)

At the time I had heard/read LL had installed a skylight in a smaller CL, but I never found an example on any dealer's lot and it was not offered as an option. When I requested that one be added the LL factory accepted it without hesitation so I concluded they were familiar, or at least comfortable, with the mod. I don't know if they just cut out within the existing framing, or they specially boxed in the opening during fabrication. If the former, the skylight can be added by any competent RV shop. If the latter, the frame cutting/welding would give me extreme cause for pause. Definitely not a DIY project. Framing details can only be provided by the factory. BTW, it appears that some 2015 CLs are coming with the skylight standard.

You folks don't state what model vent you are working with. The early, including 2104, CLs used small single speed un-ducked fans. They were noisy and very inefficient. An optional upgrade got you larger, but still noisy fan. When I ordered mine I knew I wanted authentic Fan-Tastic vents. The LL factory would not honor my request to install Fan-Tastics, and sort of acted like they had never heard of them. I have subsequently replaced all three original vents with three speed reversible Fan-Tastic vents. The front two are covered with smoked Fan-Tastic Ultra-Breeze covers. With stuff on the roof including a rear view camera there was insufficient room to install a cover on the bath vent.
What a difference! The Fan-Tastics are quieter, more efficient, draw less current, and move so much more air. The good news is I think the newest CLs are coming from the factory with genuine Fan-Tastics installed. And BTW, there's a reason you don't reverse the bath fan or leave it open with the others sucking air out. Remember that black tank vent? (puke)
No idea who manufactured mine?
I bought my 21RBS last March. It has the XL upgrade but no skylight in the BR. The overhead vent is a rinky dink one speed fan. I get the feeling my CL is a 2013 even though I bought it in early 2014. Is there a manufacture label somewhere? Not that it matters since I dont think I can upgrade the skylight now (bummer).

LL, like most other manufacturers, crank in changes throughout the year. The concept of model year, unlike with an auto, doesn't really mean much.

Charlie, my 3 fans are noisy so definitely not fan-tastics. I plan to upgrade at least one this year!
You'll like it. The Fan-Tastics are 10" in diameter; the OEM L'l Scremers are smaller, 4"-5". I like Tinkeringtechie's description of the OEMs: they expend most of their energy creating turbulence. You don't need that.

The fan blade diameter on my 3 OEMs are appx 9.5" and they move air out of the trailer very well... They're a little noisier than I expected, but until I actually hear a fan-tastic I have nothing to gauge by?
I meant to report back that I installed the first 2 Maxxair IIs last week, easy job, the smoke looks great - matches all the other black stuff up there! Hope to get the 3rd one on next week?
Charlie FYI, my fans are Vortex. The 21RBS brochure mentions them as part of the XL Pkg. I also found them here and they are a spot on match: http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/vortex-replacement-vent-fan-upgrade/49448

Two of the fans in my 21-BHS are the same as shown here. I ordered a high-capacity fan for the kitchen area when I placed my Camplite order with the factory. My dealer installed a Max II fan cover over the high-capacity fan for me upon delivery.
Would one of you mind posting pictures of the finished install? From the looks of the product on Amazon it seems to sit higher than my AC cover by a couple inches (I have the smaller 9.2 kbtu AC).
Thanks!
NMKen look about 16 post back I showed before and afters...
thanks for the pointer - they look good

I took the larger AC unit, so it won't help you. However, even with these additions, AC, antenna, fan covers, etc., our Camplites are not as tall as the campers made by other manufacturers. There is plenty of headroom, so I consider the lower profile to be another advantage to owning a Camplite. Having a smaller unit, reducing the wind resistance, results in less gas consumption.
You should check with the dealer so that you know the exact height of your unit. You don't want to be surprised by a low bridge or overpass as you travel down the road.
Mine's the 13.5 also
3rd one installed today... here's a pic just in case somebody's curious how the "smoked" Maxxair IIs look..
