Title: Queen Mattress Upgrade
Post by: txrob on February 01, 2015, 02:01:02 PM
We are the new owners of a 2014 16DBS that has the standard factory 60x80 queen mattress in the front.
The OEM mattress is about 3-4" thick and very uncomfortable.  I would like to replace it with a new Queen from a department store.
I'm concerned about the added tongue weight.  Some of the mattresses I've been looking at weight ~80 pounds.
I know LL has a premium mattress, but I can't find it on the web (link please).
What mattress upgrades have people done?
Any advice would be helpful...
Thanks

Welcome to the forum! We bought a foam mattress from amazon and love it:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GTCAY04/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

At 38lbs it's not a big factor for tongue weight. We did need to upgrade the gas struts under the bed storage to keep it open.

We're still using the factory mattress, quite happily. We do have a mattress pad on it, then a comforter that we sleep on the top of, with covers over that.

Also, Tinkerin' Techie called. He wants his hat back.

We bought our mattresses from Mattress Insiders online.  They deal with RV mattresses.  We bought an 8 inch Luxury Cool Max Gel Foam Memory Foam Mattresses for our 16TBS. If you go on their site look for promotional coupons and enter the code in.  They were running a fairly good sale not too long ago. Not sure if it is still on or not. Ours are very very comfortable. I believe Merlin also bought mattresses from them.

If you leave out the key words of "8 inch mattress", that's a seven word product name. Nothing good can come of that. Nothing.

Thanks for the info.
I'll look into other options but I would still like to know about added tongue weight if we go with an 80 lb mattress.
As a side note, I'm pulling with a Tundra.

If you assume the stock mattress is about 20lbs, that means a net increase of 60lbs. So your net tongue weight increase is 30lbs. Shouldn't be a problem for the Tundra.

I posted my mattress upgrade in another thread. We went with a real Sealy mattress and will upgrade the struts from ones I found on Hatchlift.com's site. We made up the bed yesterday in preparation for our trip this week....what a difference a real mattress makes!! Happy Trails....

Thanks for the links to the beds and struts.
That Cool-Max gel bed looks nice, and it's made in the usa.
we are going to go test out some dept store mattresses this weekend.

I have a basic question about this entire mattress discussion.  My wife and I noticed, like others have commented, that the all (or mostly all) aluminum construction creates a lot of condensation in the trailer.  We use a "crystal" type dehumidifier in the trailer but still have lots of moisture in the a.m.  We have been concerned about whether our our mattress is acting like a wick and absorbing a lot of that moisture, leading to mold, etc.

I am sure this is true of trailers generally but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the significance of the problem and whether their are any solutions, short of periodic mattress replacement.  I think I saw somewhere that someone mentioned just using an inflatable mattress and scrapping the whole foam mattress altogether.

Thoughts?  Comments?

Thank you.

There are moisture barrier covers you can get for mattresses. They come in various quality - the breathable ones cost more but don't affect comfort much.

I just brought my CL home last week, I keep looking for condensation (in the AM) but none so far..

We installed a 7" 60X80" memory foam mattress in our CampLite 11. It's as comfortable the bed at home and we "really" like it. The ready to camp weight of our CampLite is around 2000lbs, with the tongue weight @ 350lbs. I'm sure the mattress increased tongue TW, but did not check TW before mattress installation.

I second the Mattress Insiders! Despite the long name, that mattress is great  And they have a good variety of sizes

We spent almost all day today shopping for supplies for our new trailer and we found a local store that sells the CoolMax mattress - The same one from Mattress Insiders.  That is a a supper soft bed and you sink way into it - Not good for me.  I like a firm mattress.
Most of the mattresses we found were in the 12" range, which is too thick for the 16DBS, given the closet on the side.

Is the "Black Label" mattress from LL available anywhere?  What is the actual name of that mattress?
Thanks

I might be the first CL owner to install a sleepnumber this spring.   I will post how it goes if I can make it work.

Marshal Bill, I think I found the manufacturer of the Black Label mattress;  Lippert Components. It is in their Ever Series line.    Here is the link: http://lci1.com/ever-series-mattresses
There is a link on the site to find dealers.

Good research.Who wud'a thunk Lippert, the metal fabs guys who make RV chassis components and axles? I suspect they bought a mattress company to grab another piece of the RV market. Works for me.

I'll also call the manufacturer provided in your link.
If anyone knows of an aftermarket dealer for that mattress at a cheaper price please let me know...

Our CoolMax matttress can be used on either side; one side for the supper soft and the other for more firmer bed. Did the local store not show you this? I do believe that Mattress Insiders does have a return policy if you don't like the mattress.  I would give them a call to see what they have to say.

The owner of the store offered the 100 night return as well...
Still looking...

I ordered a mattress yesterday - Hope it works out...
I found this "Priage Memory Foam" mattress [a href="http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Priage-Green-Tea-Charcoal-6-inch-Queen-size-Memory-Foam-Mattress/6756787/product.html?refccid=DMM5XYZ7G3MKB2SIZRRLW2XCRQ&searchidx=1"]here.

I[/a] selected this mattress for a few reasons:
[ul type="disc"][li]Firm[/li][li]Made in USA[/li][li]"CertiPUR-US" Certified
[/li][/ul][div]
The mattress is a discontinued model from [a href="http://www.spiritsleep.com"]Spirit Sleep[/a] located in Asheville, NC

If you are looking for a mattress, this website can answer a lot of your questions:  www.sleeplikethedead.com
I'll let you know how the mattress works out...

I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00474X5DO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it has worked great so far.  It's a 10 inch memory foam mattress.

Don't know about the factory upgraded mattress.  We bought a nice super firm memory foam for our old white box O death.  Still got it, will move to new camper.

As far as moisture, I think all trailers will do this given the right weather conditions.  Our old one did it and no ill affects to the mattress so far, 5 years and counting.

Found Mattress we bought:

http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/avena-foam-rv-mattress-short-queen/77911

It is expensive but NICE!  They make this in a full size queen as well:

Edit: added mattress links

We had success at Ikea. I also increased the gas struts on the bead to lift the weight.

We did the same thing from Costco and then upgraded the bed struts to 60lbs.  It worked out well.

I'll vouch for the Black label mattress.  A good move on the part of LL.  Its more re comfortable than the one at home.
