Title: Where to get driver/bit thingy for 8 sided screws/fasteners
Post by: jeffrey on January 31, 2015, 11:43:49 PM
I can get by with a tight fitting 4 sided one but would really like to have the right tool for the job.

I called Livin Lite when I couldn't find the correct 8 sided bit.....they told me to use a four sided bit. Works just fine.

They told me the same thing - a #2 square bit

Yup, you have no idea the time I spent trying to find the correct size. When I realized it was a Robertson, I felt like a fool.

The screws are square driver or Robertson heads. They are used extensively in the RV industry because they are easy to use and not easily prone to slipping or stripping. The ones used by LL are a modification with 8 sides, still fitting the four sided square driver. The 8 sided version is easier to mate with the driver because it will allow +/- 45 degree rotations. In a pinch they will accept a Phillips driver.

Perhaps this from xkcd.com can help, but a little knowledge can be dangerous:

Thanks for all the replies. Guess I'll just make sure the one I'm using is #2

You can get the double square bits from Snap-on tools,if you can chase down one of their trucks and I think Fastenal also has them. But a #2 square works just fine for me.
Thanks for the tip.  Most the screws come out fine with the #2 square but I had a few difficult ones. I pounded on the bit slightly with a hammer to get it to seat a little better and possibly loosen them. And that worked for me. So I'm good now.
