Title: Slide out trim
Post by: tinkeringtechie on August 03, 2014, 02:12:50 AM
The slide out trim started flapping loose at the bottom on our last trip and today I went to investigate/fix the issue. Turns out the trim is just glued to... more trim... nice looking black aluminum trim:

So being the utilitarian that I am, instead of fixing the one piece that was loose, I just pulled off the rest of the pieces. They came off surprisingly easy. It was attached with a combination of grey foam tape (like the 3M outdoor stuff) and flexible grey caulk/adhesive:

The trim material itself is actually some kind of foam finished to look like wood. It's slightly warped though, which is why the bottom popped out. We've had a little bit of a heat wave here, which I suspect might have caused the adhesive to loosen up a bit.

So not exactly thrilled that the trim started falling off, but I'm happy that underneath is actually quite clean. Our plan is to stick postcards from places that we visit on the black trim to create a border.

Yep, we're going to leave it off. We never liked it originally (it really doesn't fit in with the rest of the trailer). The black trim works by itself and will be a good surface to attach postcards from the places we take it.

Tinkering,
In the picture with the sofa and your missing trim, I noticed that you have the same sofa as ours.  This is a bit off subject, but going to ask anyway. We have had our sofabed replaced already. When the dealer replaced it, they couldn't figure out what the support was underneath the mattress. We finally told them to forget it and we would use a piece of plywood board.  It was a point of contention for us and we were frustrated at that point.  But, now are wondering if anyone else out there could tell us what the support should be.  Sorry for getting a bit out of line on this post.

We too have had trim coming away and superglued it to where it should be.

[/quote]It might look like a sofa, but that's actually our dinette converted to a bed with the cushions vinyl side up. We use it as a base for our portable crib (the tent looking thing in the picture). I'm not that familiar with the sofa bed. Is it the scissor hinge type? It's probably worth starting a new thread about to see if anyone else has thoughts on the support material.

[font face="comic sans ms" size="3"][span]    [/span]For those of you who have loosening trim around the slideouts and want to retain it, here's a solution that works really good, First, I have to explain why I had to address this on our two week old camper.
[span]    [/span]I accidently left the bathroom door open on our 14DBS, and retracted the dinette slideout. I heard a loud crack and saw the wood trim split in half as the slide ran into the bathroom door on the way in.
I pulled the trim piece the rest of the way off and removed all the adhesive and foam tape from the back. Then I glued the split trim piece back together and let it set for a day. Then I cleaned the wood trim back side and the black aluminum framing around the slideout with an alcohol soaked wrag to remove any oil or residue. I then reattached the wood trim using four 6 inch lengths of 3/4" automotive trim adhesive foam tape (the grey stuff found in auto parts stores), placed at a slight angle. The trim piece has held better than the factory adhesives, and is more solidly held to the aluminum.[/font]
