Title: where to add extra propane tank
Post by: shark24 on March 19, 2016, 12:47:59 AM
Any thoughts on adding an additional propane tank. We use a separate tank that we take for our fire pit so we don't use out the needed propane for things needed. Would like to mount it close to the others that are enclosed but need an easy way to detach when we want to use it. Sorry if this is a dumb question. New to camping.
Thanks

not sure how much room you have on the tongue, but i replaced the single mount with a dual and added a 2nd tank...ran about $30 (not including the extra tank)

it is pretty easy to remove a tank, but you could also just get an extended hose

Since you want to move the extra tank around the dual-type holders in the pics above [span style="font-size:13.3333px;"]probably [/span]aren't all that practical. Too much work to remove the tank for use - time better spent with a cold adult refreshment. With that in mind I went googling for the kind of single tank carriers sometimes seen hanging off the backs of truck campers. Didn't find exactly the kind I was look'n for but...

>> [a href="http://www.mygaragestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=1539"]I thought this option looks pretty good - I imagine mounting it to the bumper[/a] << Add a couple eye rings to the sides and you could secure the cylinder with a bungee cord (or a cable lock if you live/camp in a shifty areas). To mount it to the bumper it might be a good idea to also use a piece of aluminum angle. Mounted the angle to the face of the bumper like a shelf. The idea is that when the bottom of the box is mounted, it is more supported. I'd also drill some holes in the bottom to let the water drain out and the bugs crawl in.

How good are you with tools?  I am not trying to be a smart-alack, because with a little know how there are tons of options:

[a href="http://www.amazon.com/BKT-2286-Mounting-Worthington-Manchester-diameter/dp/B00OCDRB94"]single tank mount[/a]

You would need to attach this to your rear bumper or to some other point on the chassis.   It is quick clamp for the tank.

One to just set on the interior floor

[a href="http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/black-tank-foot/42247"]Tank foot[/a]

you can google search for single LP tank mount and go to images to see dozens more.

Happy modding!!

If you don't mind, what is the cylinder tank behind the batteries?

Unless you really need a 3rd tank (the uses on the trailer consume relatively little), I would just use one of the 2 already on the tongue. Just remove the tank switchover system and go with a single tank attachment for the trailer. The second tank will then be very easy to remove for use at the fire pit. That's a safe, secure way to carry a tank and if by chance you do run out of propane in the tank attached to the trailer, you should have enough in your fire pit tank to get you through trailer use until you can refill, just by manually switching the hose over. This will save the weight and hassle of a 3rd tank. In any event, don't be tempted to store a tank inside the trailer!

Oh fascinating. Fuel station as in gasoline for the vehicle?  Do you have a link so I could read more about it and price?

not exactly cheap, but pretty simple and well worth the price

here is a thread i started on it...

I was wondering how much propane the refrigerator used. We just got back from a 26 day 3,500 mile trip to Florida. The refrigerator was used on electricity in the campgrounds. I started with full propane tanks and was nervous that they wouldn't last, even with minimal cooking. I took both tanks to Costco for a refill. $1.36. I had used less than a gallon. I have the 2 tank set up above, and with my usage might have some left for the next several years.

Too much work?

Turn off the valve.

Unscrew the hose.

Back off the big wing nut a few turns.

I think I can have a propane tank loose in my hands in about 15 seconds.

Sorry - just doesn't sound like a lot of work to me!

We may need to just agree to disagree. If the only intent of having the second tank is to use it near their fire pit then I don't see it as all that practical to have to hookup & un-hookup a dual tank system. What's wrong with the spare tank carrier system I suggested earlier in the thread?

Nothing's wrong.

But I was wondering if I was exaggerating with the 15 second estimate, and we wanted to weigh the tanks before our upcoming FL trip, so...
