Title: Fresh/Gray Water Capacity
Post by: acm on November 22, 2015, 06:45:37 PM
Really like what I see with your products. Looking for front bedroom. The Axxess 8.5x26 looks like it would work well for us but wonder if there is an option to increase the capacity of holding tanks. The 63 gal fresh would be good for us, more would be even better,  but I know from experience that 28 gal grey is going to be an issue if this includes waste water from kitchen sink, shower and bathroom sink. Your website show as coming soon the 8.5x26 and 8.5x28 VRV, are these models available now? Spec. sheet and options available?
Are there any plans to offer a model with garage separate from living quarters?

I know in the past many members have said they were able to customize their units without any real trouble. @christianm may be able to provide a few more details on what options you may have available to you to customize.

With regard to fresh, grey and black water capacity on your proposed Axxess, with the fresh water capacity more than double the grey water capacity you will certainly run out of grey water storage before you run out of water. Having double the water capacity in an RV is rather unusual. Usually they are close to the same capacity.

But anyway, I hesitate to mention this but you can dump your grey water in place depending on where you camp. Dumping grey water is probably illegal (and I am sure that others will point this out) but it is no different than washing your hands or doing the dishes outside and dumping the water, all of which is perfectly legal.

The few times I have done it, and I only did it on semi-rustic sites where the RV was parked on hard packed ground, I dug a small depression right under the grey/black water dump outlet so the water would soak in and not run off. Then I cracked the grey water valve and let it run out over an hour's time. And I temporarily put an old sock over the outlet to catch any food particles and a camping chair in front of the dump valve to block it from view ;-).

So there, I have bared my soul and confessed my sins. Would I do it again,.... Would I do the same for black water, no.

Maybe they expect a certain amount of the fresh water supply to end up in the black tank via flushing.

We have two ways of conserving the gray water tank when boondocking. First, when showering place a plastic tub in the shower to catch most of the water, and dump in the woods away from camp. Second, use the outdoor faucet and a plastic tub for washing dishes, again dumping in the woods away from camp.

Thanks for the input, I too have been forced to empty grey when boondocking, When I buy new I'm going to try and purchase a unit with more grey capacity or know that I can modify to fix this issue. Anyone know where/how the holding tanks are installed. I assume they are tucked in limited space of floor framing members. Anyone know if they are accessible? Thanks again.

The holding tanks are accessible, unless you get one of the new models with a bottom cover and heat ducting. But I suspect that they will be tucked between floor members which will limit any size increase.

I think I read that it is only the truck campers, not travel trailers, that are enclosed and heated.

On my 16TBS, the tanks are easily accessible, but they fill the spaces they occupy between the trailer framing. The only way I see to add capacity without losing ground clearance would be to add additional tanks. That may be more reasonable on the larger trailers, but not on the 16. And yes, the new heated and insulated "basements" are only on the truck campers.

Are there any plans to offer a model with garage separate from living quarters?
Hi there!

Thanks for considering a Livin Lite product!

Just spoke to my contact here at the factory, and the answers to your questions are as follows:

1) At this time, there are no factory options for bigger water tanks in any of our units or floorplans.

2) We are no longer producing the Axxess models and have focused our resources to the VRV toy hauler lines. The website has been recently updated, so all of the information on there should be relevant and correct :-) Spec. Sheets and options will be included on our website as well.

3) As of right now, there are no plans to further separate the garage area from the living quarters .

Hope this is helpful!

Christian

My wife and I have been enjoying our 14DBS for two years now. The first time out we saw the grey tank fill to the shower stall pretty quick. Since then after researching at other rv sites, we now dump our kitchen sink dish water and hand washing water in the black tank via the toilet bowl. It has extended our single fill days to 3 1/2 days without dumping.
F.Y.I. - Our tank capacities are:
38 gal. fresh water
32 gal. grey water
36 gal. black water (28 imperial gal. is marked on the tank)

You have an unusually large black water tank compared to the others. But given that, your strategy of dumping dishwater in the toilet makes a lot of sense.

When we purchased our trailer two years ago, I was crawling underneath it and noticed the black tank had molded lettering on the bottom of the tank saying 28 gal. imp. That meant imperial gallons (such as used in Canada) which is equal to 5 gallons US. Actually my post is incorrect, it calculates to 35 gallons US, not 36. (my error)
Nevertheless, it sure is beneficial to have the extra capacity!

Correction again! I am showing my age here. After checking the Canadian gallon info, 28 Imp. gallons is equal to 33.6 US gallons.
I knew it was more but I haven't checked for a few decades! Anyway, it is more than 28 gal.

I assume you've seen the threads and posts on the issue with the grey tank capacity that affected some Camplites? The vent pipe is too far into the tank and reduces (dramatically) the capacity.

When we started dumping our wash water into the commode, we have never had a full grey or black tank before the fresh runs out. So when the fresh water runs out, we fill it and then dump the other tanks as well.

Why is the fresh water capacity lower on the 21RBS (30.5 GAL) than the 16TBS (38 gal)?  We have the 16TBS and want the 21RBS but can't understand why the fresh water capacity would be less?  Can the 21RBS be ordered with a larger fresh water tank?

Thor Livinlite is making a big move toward standardization across its product line. Given all the other tanks are the same size for 14s-21s I suspect the FW tanks are the same also.

The stated FW capacity sometimes includes the 6 gallons in the HW heater. It varies depending on whether engineering or marketing is writing the ad. I think the actual numbers are 30-32 in the FW tank with an additional 6 in the water heater. These 6 gallons, once filled, do not really add to your usable FW total. When the FW tank is empty there will still be 6 gallons in the WH.

Due to the placement of the pump pick up hose in the tank it is not possible to use all the water in the tank. I have measured 28 usable gallons on my 21RBS before the pump sucks air. This is extremely sensitive to leveling of the trailer. The same is true for draining the tank . Also consider that FW is the LEAST limiting water capacity. FW is easily replaced with a hose or jug and 5 gal jugs can be carried in the TV. The first limit is gray water, followed much later by black water.

So my conclusion is both trailers probably have the same sized tanks and the FW capacity, excluding WH, is around 32 gallons with somewhat less usable. How's that for a definite maybe?  ;)

As an aside, since Thor acquired LL they have completely stopped any customization. What they have is what you get. :'(     Then the mods begin, but they're yours.  :)

I have a 2016 16TBS.  My fresh tank tops out at 32 gallons - measured with a flow meter.

Thanks.  I'm purchasing a 2016 21RBS (made at the "old" factory I believe) and the dealer is just going to install a 2nd FW tank.
