Title: Reworked 21RBS Dinette
Post by: charliem on April 27, 2014, 01:07:14 PM
UPDATE 11/08/2015: I can no longer recommend the table top from RV Sinks I originally used so I have removed the link. The laminated foam core table warped with usage and the laminate edges became detached. This may be a process/material problem specific to this vendor or may be generic to all foam core products. I will be exploring other lightweight construction. That said, the basic wall and floor support concepts are valid and have been proven over several years and thousands of miles.

Before:
Table was small, wobbly, and had to be removed for travel.
The benches were too low for old people and the U-shaped back was only for very small people.
Items placed on the window ledge fell off during travel.

After:
New table is 39"x 32", stable, and moves with the slide. However the slide must be partially opened to allow bath/fridge access while traveling if left in place (10 sec).
Completely removable and retains the old table if desired or for bed makeup.
Benches are raised by 3.75".
Added space under table for computer bags, briefcases, etc.
Retaining lip added to window ledge.

The table is attached to the wall studs with aluminum angle stock and drawer slide hardware and supported by an adjustable leg. Internal metal plates were specified to attach wall mount and leg. The leg can be placed on the floor or on the bed lip of the slide. A rubber bungee tie down is added for travel. The benches are raised by boxes constructed of 1x4 lumber and ΒΌ" plywood. These will be painted black.

2"x 2" aluminum angle stock, painted black, is bolted to the window ledge as a retainer.

Awesome mods Charlie. I'm not thrilled with the pedestal table so far and have been exploring other options. Maybe a cantilevered aluminum beam?

How do you like it so far? Have you used it on a trip yet?

Travis,

Haven't tried it on a trip yet, but we've played with it and sat in it in the driveway. It really feels good. On the cantilevered beam I'm not sure how you might secure it. Maybe to the two 1x1 Al studs, but would it still be removable? The wall and leg support comes pretty close and allows the table to move with the slide.

I fought with the single post thing, even tried a more expensive locking marine grade post. That helped, but didn't totally fix the wobble and it made it harder for my wife to remove it for travel. I just don't think there is a single removable post solution within a reasonable physical size.

BTW: we need to watch it. People are beginning to talk  :-/

We want to change out the sofa for a dinette also. Can charley tell me how he constructed the seats?? Were these custom made??
What are the pitfalls to look out for with my 21rbs??

I like the idea for the table. Where do you store it?? What is it made of??

Any additional info will be appreciated.

The basic seat structure came with the camper. I bought it with the dinette option. The new cushions were custom made by a boating upholstery shop. I raised the seats 3.75" with wooden framed boxes (can I say that here?).

My second, and present, version is here: [a href="http://livinlite-owners.com/post/20311/thread"]http://livinlite-owners.com/post/20311/thread[/a] . The table with removable leaf stays up all the time. It moves with the slide, but I put the leaf on the bed while traveling. This allows access to the fridge and bathroom without running the slide out. The full table goes down to make the dinette bed for guests. The table is made of wood. (There's that word again)! The top is Birch ply; the edging is Oak. The reinforcements are also Oak.
