Title: Observations on retirement
Post by: leslie on July 26, 2015, 11:39:33 AM
My husband and I are losing our sense of time in that we have to make an effort to determine which day of the week it is and what the date is. I have automated payment for all of our bills, so I don't need to worry about deadlines. Now every morning we remind each other of the day and the date.

My retired friends do everything as an offset to Sunday, which they call "fat paper day". It's the only way they can mark the time.

"Hey, let's go fishing."

"Ya, cool. When ?"

"Early morning, day after Fat Paper Day."

"What day's today ?"

"Fat Paper Day is day after tomorrow."

"Oh, man, I just missed a doctor appointment."

forget what day of the week it is.

2 years (that's when the house is paid off) and counting. I envy you!

We're going to need a different point of reference because we haven't had the paper delivered for years.

Just picked up my neighbors papers for three days; clear signal he is gone!

I take the Atlanta Journal and Athens GA papers via the internet, no delivery and can access from wherever. Reading the paper via the computer is great; no going out at 530 am in underwear to get the paper and not seeing any neighbors in underwear getting the paper!

Retired,,, twice.  In 2005 from HP after 30 years.  I lasted 6 months and was bored out of my mind. I went to work for McKesson for 8 years and with health issues I retired again. But again, very bored.  I had/have plenty of hobbies but really missed the work. I started working at 12 years old for 65 cents and hour.  Hard to break old habits.  Lately (due to health again) I'm bored to death. But I hope all that changes once the second bionic knee is in place.   Production date... August 26th !!

We love retirement!!!!!  Get to plan outdoor activities according to latest weather forecast. When it's bad weather, head to the shop to repair & build things. Debbie has plenty of stuff she likes to do in the house during bad weather, too.

Try to keep a winter project in the shop, too. Current project building a Cafe Racer for Debbie out of a Ninja 250 motorcycle.

No longer wear a watch or keep a phone with me, unless traveling!  :)

Well, Queen, I am 68, female with pretty bad arthritis in my right knee, and sometimes I limp, particularly if it is raining. I can not only prepare the inside of the trailer for towing, but I can also hitch and unhitch, all by myself. I can hook up the water and the electricity by myself, and I can also go to the dump station. (The only time I had a spill was when a man decided to help me, and didn't have the sewer hose connected properly.) I can also drive to do the towing, and back into a campsite. I worked my way through the learning curve because I do not want to stop RVing if something should happen to my husband. Just spraining his ankle would prevent him from doing some of these things. I guess I am a girl scout - always prepared!

Only you can determine how much a bum knee can prevent you from these tasks. I encourage all female RVers to learn how to do everything for the RV. There is one thing - my husband has had to show me how to use some tools, as I am not at all mechanically inclined!

[p]I've been retired now for 2 yrs and loving every minute of it. Not bored here, always seem to have something to do and Spring/Summer/Fall Camping is always never put on Hold.
Single at 62 I do as I want and am looking forward to the upcoming winter months to head southwest to the Tucson Area and try out snowbirding, then next summer spend a few months in Lake City, Colorado from July through end of August. The Colorado venture will be flyfishing/off-roading/kicked back at the RV park-full relax time.[/p][p]
[/p][p]I too forget the time, be it the day of the week. I now do my running around from M-F if I am in-town then on the weekends I stay home and take care of the home stuff. No need to camp anymore on the busy weekends or dealing with the additional traffic. [/p][p]Nice to be able to shop any day during the week from M-F with the stores empty.[/p][p]
Retirement-enjoy it to the best you can, we all worked hard enough to finally get here.[/p]

We are both retired, as well. Gregg retired one year ago and Joan four years ago. We are always busy doing something and if we can't find something to do our dog seems to have ideas (play ball, swim, play frisbee always seem to be high on his list.) We are coming close to purchasing our TT.
