The event marks a near-century old tradition when women Salvation Army volunteers known as "Lassies" made donuts for soldiers on the front lines of World War I.
If you're a doughnut lover, you'll have lots of options for free or discounted doughnuts in the your area. Here is a sampling of the deals across the nation:
Dunkin Donuts: Get one free donut of your choice on June 5 with the purchase of a beverage. The offer excludes Croissant Donuts and Cheesecake Squares. LaMar's Donuts: Free donut with a hole. (LaMar's Donuts has teamed up with the Salvation Army on National Donut Day to raise awareness on child hunger.)
Fractured Prune Doughnuts: At participating locations you can get a free OC SAND doughnut.
Winn-Dixie:Free powdered donut hole at participating locations
Jiffy Lube: [SELECT LOCATIONS ONLY] Some locations in Houston, Philadelphia and South Carolina will not only give you a free donut, but will do an air pressure check.
