Title: Picture storage & uploads
Post by: shovelhead on June 05, 2015, 04:29:13 PM
I know this has been an issue for us. I just found out that if you are an Amazon Prime member you have access to unlimited "cloud" storage for pictures.  I tried it today and it's pretty slick and  a nice perk for Prime members.

My Dad... as a test from Prime Pictures

So, I am a Prime member and I can store pictures there. But how to transfer a picture to the board?

I tried but could not get it to do anything. Could not get it to copy so no way to paste.

Same old procedure to paste the "picture location" into your post.  Just another place to store your photo's (free)

My son, DIL and Grand Daughters in the front of my favorite restaurant.

Huuuuummmm..... picture  code disappeared?  Strange

Thanks Shovelhead. I want to use Prime for this and didn't find the way to do it. Your pics disappeared though. Is this a glitch or did you remove them?

[font size="3"]I think the PB software is looking for a .jpg extension in the link. I also think the storage sites like Flickr and Photobucket are looking for a true .jpg or equivalent file before accepting an upload. As a test I tried uploading an Excel file by changing the .xlsx extension to .jpg. It's an old trick used to fool email blocking software. It didn't work. The storage site came back with an "unsupported" or "image size could not be determined" error. [/font]

I usually use Photobucket, but am trying Imgur.  Here is a test.

Trying again, using the sizing feature in Imgur.  In all case, I am using Direct Link and then the "Insert Image" function of the board.

A fellow on a flying forum gave me the head's up on how to link to a Google Photos image.

Instead of copying their provided link, or the address in the address bar, just right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Address" (on a Mac - I imagine Windows is similar).

Then paste that link between image tags.

I complained there was no was to select image size, and he said if you just resize the window before copying, it resizes the link.

For example:

[img style="max-width:100%;" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/oJckiNU1Sgbo8cMPveBcRvyHxPWEv4X5Otp__DcwgLI7=w392-h163-no"]

You can also look at the link you've pasted, and type in the width you want.

Pretty cool! And with the many ways to search for images, it should make getting your hands on the right one that much easier!

BTW, It's taken me about a week to upload the 19,000 images I exported from iPhoto, but I'm in the home stretch!

Photobucket allows you to set the custom size of the image you want to post and does it for the whole album.[a href="http://s304.photobucket.com/user/bvabob1/media/Our%20New%20Camper/image.jpg1_zpsggodue2v.jpg.html"]
[img style="max-width:100%;" src="http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn197/bvabob1/Our%20New%20Camper/th_image.jpg1_zpsggodue2v.jpg"]

o[/a]f course photobucket is a link back to your entire album so that is an issue in itself if you have stuff you don't want to share.

I do believe I'm going to be shifting away from iPhoto and Flickr and using Google Photos as my go-to online photo repository. Took over a week but now all 19,000 of my iPhoto photos are there.

So far, nothing not to like - unless one is concerned about Google having access to their photos.

On my iPad, grabbing a link is now easy from the Google Photos site - (in Safari - not so easy, if even possible, from their app).

I've been a huge fan of Google photos and now with unlimited (albeit sometimes reduced sizes) photos its an even better deal than flickr.

[quote source="/post/12286/thread" timestamp="1434292267" author="@kybrowns"]Seems the best I can do with TapTalk which I use reading this forum and my iPhone and Google pictures is just send a link to my pictures. [/quote][font size="3"]I think you are running into the inherent limits of the little screen. I've tried TapTalk and discarded it. I've tried the ProBoards app and it's disappointing too. So far I've had the best luck with Safari, the browser built into IOS, but I've not tried uploading or linking with it. The small screen apps just can't do what the full screen laptops can do. So, when I need pictures uploaded or linked I transfer the images to the laptop and go from there. That also gives me the opportunity to sort, organize, and save the images for future use. The mobile phone cameras are great for catching moments and getting pretty good images, but they're not good image manipulators or data storage devices.

I finally had some time to try Photobucket and it worked fine. For me, it's an extra step because I download all my photos first to my Mac using Apple Photos. Once there, it's a easy process to upload selected images to Photobucket and share them with a copied link into this forum. I was frustrated with the opaque and needless complexity of Flickr and I don't use cloud services like Google Photos as my only storage. Using remote servers is fine for sharing, but I prefer to store my documents and my photos locally on my Macs. There are details to using Photobucket I need to learn yet, but that's no different that learning how to resize, group, and post using any other software. Now that I can use Photobucket, I'll have to restrain myself from "spamming" the forum with all of our award-winning, amazing photos (not).

[p]A great feature of Photobucket is how it works with Androids with cameras.

With an Android go to Photobucket.
Select upload.
It asks you for a location.
Select camera.
Snap your pic and it uploads automatically.[/p][p]
[/p][p]I believe that shaves two pretty long steps for most everyone. It's how I took a pic of this exotic camper in Cape Ann this weekend.[/p][p]
