Title: Sewer Hose Tube in 10 Easy Steps
Post by: kath on May 31, 2015, 02:46:02 PM
Thought I would share photos of the mod I did yesterday to solve my sewer hose storage problem. The storage tube that came with my CL 16DBS was way too short and I wanted something easier (and easily changed or removed if I decide to put something underneath instead). Since I don't want to mess (yet?) with beefing up the rear bumper for carrying bikes, etc., it seemed like a convenient place to put this. I used cable ties for convenience and might  consider u-bolts if necessary. Assuming the ties hold up to wear and tear, it's solidly attached.

With the graphics and accessories already on the trailer, this mod matches pretty nicely.

Parts list:
- one 5x5" vinyl fence post (I cut down an 8 footer)
- two vinyl post caps
- one plastic house gutter (Home Depot only had the K style; I think the D style would be better)
- two (a matching pair) gutter end caps (I used only one for now)
- four heavy duty cable ties
- velcro or other means to secure the post caps

1. Setup:

Nice tutorial Kath! It does look good on your 16DBS.

In step No.5 you show the cable ties. How easy is it to feed them in one hole and have the end pop out the other hole? I'd anticipate that significant amounts of swearing aloud might be involved, yet you did it repeatedly. Impressive.

Hahahaha!  PEIr, no swearing necessary.  Since the frame locations are so close to the ends, they're easily reached. I think it might be less than a foot.

Glad you liked it.

Given the lack of photo support on this forum, you may well have spent more time on the photos and posting than the mod itself !!

I really dig the gutter slide-out tray. I think you're wrong about the D-shape. This one gives you a nice finger hold to grab the gutter and pull.

Yes, the Flickr photo experience was a labor of love  B-|   But I figured someone else wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel if they wanted to do something like this.

You're right about the handhold on the K shape. But  the D shape might spread out a little easier. For less than 5 bucks, I might give it a try.

Great looking mod. Wonder if it could be mounted under the camper instead of the back bumper? We will have a bike rack on our back bumper so no room for something like this.

I'm envious of your bike rack and hope to be able to get the rear bumper beefed up for that someday.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't put this underneath, with the proper brackets to hold it up, especially on the longer 21. On the 16, I couldn't see anywhere convenient for it, without hanging down too far. I'm thinking it would likely need to be shorter to fit in the undercarriage spaces available.

Why would you want to mount a bike rack under the trailer ?

Added the super tube in place of the small tube LL provided. Didn't need the 15' hose while in Yellowstone but put it on because I had packed it in anticipation of needing it. Yellowstone sites are tight so a 5' hose I had was more than enough.

What did you end up using to secure the post caps?

I put a 2-inch piece of self-stick heavy duty velcro on the top of the tube and a corresponding one inside the top of the caps. Holds securely.

After using this setup all summer, I couldn't be more pleased. It makes the hose gear easily accessible without any contortions getting under the trailer. And it continues to look nice.

Ok, awesome.  Thanks!  I have everything ordered except the velcro and wanted to find out how you had done that before ordering that part.

On the subject of sewer hose holder modifications, for those of you who have created or bought a larger holder, what kinds of items can you store in the smaller original holder that came with your trailer? (Just trying to make the best use of all available space!)

Sorry, no info on that. The trailer came equipped that way. But they are standard scizzor jacks in my RV parts supply store.

From time to time you find yourself at a site where a 7'-er will reach the dump, or you need ANOTHER 7' to reach as an extension.

One of these days I'll go get another 6' tube for use as fishing rod storage.

I know you live in that area and thought you might sign-up with us.

Thanks for asking, @Ammobob. We won't be able to make the rally, but Ft. Stevens is a great place for it. It's huge!  We camped there last summer and really enjoyed hiking around the park and bird watching on the marsh. Be sure to hike over to the Columbia River side and check out the mega container ships coming in to port with their thousands of new cars and other imports.

And, of course, the ocean beach is wild and beautiful. We're very proud of the fact that "We the People" own our beaches here, instead of private interests. If you're staying long enough to explore, go farther down the coast to Seaside and Canon Beach. Art galleries, bookstores, shopping, and great restaurants galore.

I hope you all have a great time exploring our beautiful state, as well as the fascinating trip you'll take to get here.

Kath

Gregg and I can't get to the Ft Stevens meet either, but we hope to get to that area in 2017. If you enjoy wine, the Williamette Valley produces the best Pinots!  I think it's better than Napa. The Williamette Valley is east of Seaside. I love Canon Beach, too.

Excellent!  I love your resourcefulness!  And that your idea moved to a very usable plan!  And it works!  Very nice!

So I made a carrier and followed the steps; and added a stainless steel sheet metal screw on each endcap to anchor the velcro for extra strength.

I did this to our trailer this weekend and then went camping.  Made it super easy and clean.  Plus no mess in the main compartment!

Great idea. Guess it would be too large to go under bumper. Thanks for the idea and pics.

Just purchased everything to do this but my question is how did you get the velcro to fit inside the end cap? My caps fit on fairly snugly and looking at it I don't see any room for two pieces of Velcro to fit? (One on cap and one on tube)
