Title: Mirror, mirror, on the wall...
Post by: peislander on April 30, 2015, 09:56:02 PM
First thing let me say I'm not vain. Carley Simon did not write a song about me. That was about someone else...

In the small but mighty C11FDB we decided a mirror might be a good addition. Not to look at ourselves but for the spatial effect it could have on what is quite a small cabin. In the eleven footer there's an angled base cabinet with a counter next to the wet bath. Above the counter is a blank chunk of exterior wall that spoke to us. It said "I'm the place you should install a mirror". We listened. We installed a mirror.

We went to the building supply store and found a beveled-edge loose mirror without a frame. We also found some stainless steel mirror clips and some self-adhesive felt pads of the kind meant to be used to keep furniture from scratching your nice hardwood flooring. We put the pads on the back of the mirror to help dampen any vibration. The clips were then used to fasten the mirror to the wall. We used self-tapping screws into the aluminum that is the interior skin of our trailer's exterior walls. (We had Livinlite build ours with that aluminum wall finish instead of Azdel). If you avoid over tightening, and avoid excessive loads, the screws hold very securely. If it was Azdel  I suppose some sort of drywall plug might have been necessary. Perhaps someone - an Azdel fastener person amongst us - can advise on that.

The mirror certainly did what we hoped. The small space of course is still small -- it just looks a wee bit bigger with that looking glass. The mirror doesn't rattle and has survived some dirt roads & potholes. I live in the land of dirt roads & potholes but that's another story...

If you look really big in your mirror you just need to stand farther back!
