[p]Do you have a dog? Here's a simple project to keep his or her claws from getting caught in the TT step. Initially I looked at the store bought step cover and I didn't think it looked very durable. So I bought a cheap doormat at Wally World. I proceeded to cut it in half as the mat produced two perfect sized 20 inch wide step covers for my 21RBS. The brass grommets can be purchased in a kit, for about eight bucks, which contains the punch and the die set. You will also need two 15 or 16 inch wire ties, heavy duty if possible. I used brass grommets to fortify the access holes near the four corners. The access holes are about two inches in from each edge and correspond to one of the perforated slits in the step. The attached photos should be self exclamatory. Leave the tag ends on the wire ties as you can cinch the ties if the mat loosens up.

Thanks James I have to try that...
Clever and durable. Our dog just leaps over the step but I sure don't and track all sorts of messes in there.
you are pretty close on the durability of the step mats...they are good for a season (maybe two) and then start to rip along the leading edge. of course taking it off before storing it for the winter would probably help
I bought strips of adhesive backed rubber step treads in a diamond-deck pattern from....drum roll....Harbor Freight.
If you set them down right next to each other they cover the holes. If you don't have dogs you can leave gaps for water to drain through.
Our dogs are about 50/50 on their ability to realize that the screen door is closed, before they leap over the stairs into the trailer, so it turns out it doesn't really matter what's on the step.
